Overview:
Some people want new weapons and some don't, so if you don't want to use new weapons, then these new weapons are balanced out so one is not obviously better than the rest, and it is more of a preference of fighting style. This suggestion includes Lances, Hammers, Daggers, and Spears.
Lances:
[] [] [] []
Description:
Lances are pretty much long, heavy swords that can stab stuff from a distance. Now due to the fact that a lance is essentially a long stick, it would not be crafted with wood or stone. You might as well find a long branch or a long sharp stone. However, iron and diamond can be shaped into sharp, painful points.
Damage/Durability:
Because lances take 2x as much material, they should have 2x durability. Iron lances would have 500 uses, and diamond lances would have 3000 uses(that seems way too high, tell me if you agree). Iron lances would deal 3 damage, while Diamond Lances would deal 4. Because of the size of the lances, you cannot attack as fast.
Pros:
Long distance.
Has more durability than sword.
Cons:
Slightly less damage than sword.
Slower attacking
Daggers:
[] []
Description:
Daggers would be fast, weak weapons that do not cause knockback allowing for constant hitting. Daggers can be made with all materials, and instead of effecting durability mostly, they affect damage.
Damage/Durability:
Wood daggers have 30 uses, stone has 70, Iron has 125, Gold has 15, and Diamond has 750. Wood daggers deal 1/2 heart, Stone deals 1, Iron deals 2, and Diamond deals 3.
Pros:
Fast hitting
Low Materials
Can be made with no crafting bench
Cons:
Low damage
No knockback
Low durability
Hammers:
[] []
[] [] [] []
Description:
Hammers are weapons that instead of requiring ingots, reguire blocks. So you could use stone blocks, iron, or diamond blocks. Hammers deal massive damage, and cause a lot of knockback. Hammers swing slower then lances.
Damage/Durability:
Stone hammers would have 230 uses, Iron would have 350, gold would have 130, and diamond would have 1600. Hammers deal MASSIVE damage. Stone deals 4 damage, iron deals 6, and diamond deals 8.
Pros:
Massive damage.
High durability.
High knockback. (2x of sword)
Cons:
Requires lots of materials
Very slow hitting.
Spears:
[] []
[] [] [] []
Description:
Spears are disposable yet useful weapons. Spears are only made with flint, making them not too hard to obtain. They are able to stab, and be thrown.
Damage/Durability:
Spears have 100 uses. Stabbing deals 2 damage, and throwing deals 5. Throwing it will take up 10 uses though. It will be able to be picked up again after being thrown. Spears are thrown about half the distance of an arrow.
Pros:
Slightly longer stab range than sword
Throwable
Easy to make
Cons:
Weak melee
Low durability
May be un-retrievable if thrown/stuck into a high cieling, lava, deep water, etc.
Summary:
These are weapons that I think everyone could generally enjoy, and none of them seem too overpowering. Choosing which weapon you prefer could be more of a preference thing then it being an obvious choice. These new weapons allow new fighting tactics and strategy.
...but this is exactly the same thing as all the other weapon spammers have been doing for the past 2 years...how is this the right way?

Apparently, I must not look at enough weapon threads because I've never seen the weapons balanced this way. Most of the time it seemed like there was one that was way better than the rest.

Even so, you should post your ideas there, instead of making a new thread. It keeps the forum tidy and allows people looking for weapon ideas to find them all in one convenient place, and to compare them for balance. In fact, take a look through - I guarantee some if not all of your ideas have already been suggested there.
Lances aren't listed anywhere, so I think I'll go post that.

Someone care to post the URL for this mate?
Yeah. Thanks, man.
