I think a good way to fix this is that if there was a 1x1 tower that was 20 blocks or more, it would be unstable, and might collapse.
Fixed.
I say no because I scaffold to create sky castles all of the time. It's my preferred way of playing and is riddled with it's own dangers. Perhaps I don't have to worry about mobs nearly as much, but I always have the constant fear of falling into a spider's nest in mind. fear of fall damage+difficulty to reach the castle again is always counter to "but den creeprs dnt blw u up.
You are censuring people who have ideas to make something easier because you think it shouldn't be easy. I tell you one thing: It is not easy to get a good idea!
I'm not criticizing "good ideas" but the game in the current form that makes such cheap tricks possible when the game is supposed to be about survival. As Notch said he'd rather have it be too difficult than too easy. And while the game is fantasy, it benefits from having some real world rules. It's just not realistic to think that being on a pillar and plain sight, but past some sensing threshold of 20 or whatever blocks, that you're safe. And it's not realistic to think you can be down in a 1x3 pit and be safe either. If the cheap tricks can't be eliminated, then mobs need more capabilities to overcome those cheap tricks.
It can become a cheat and I think it ruins gameplay.
For instance in survival mode, one need not bother creating a quick shelter at night. One just can build a 15-20 block tower and watch the mods below not even detect your prescence.
One need not have to strategize to get up a cliff face... one can create a tower to get to the top in seconds.
It can be fun, but should not exist in Survival mode.
Survival is single-player. Players have the right to cheat. If you don't want your gameplay ruined, don't do it.
A perfectly safe shelter is a 3-block hole in the ground. Pillaring is as easy, with the added risk of falling.
Climbing up normally is more resource-efficient.
If one chooses to pillar away from mobs or up cliffs in their game, they have that right.
It shouldn't exist? It only exists as a natural consequence of placing blocks. You're saying the ability to place blocks shouldn't exist, half the gameplay, and that's retarded.

If this thread were a girlfriend, it'd do everything but anal.
Besides, your main complaint is that you can make a shelter for the first night just by making a little tower. But you can make a shelter for the first night by digging a 2x1 hole in the ground and covering it with a bit of dirt! Are you next going to suggest that we should remove digging, because that makes the game too “easy”?
I believe that ability ot make a simple shelter also ruins the survival gameplay. I'm looking forward to the rumored Zombie Seige some mobs having the ability to destroy blocks.
Hey, if I'm playing a SURVIVAL game, I want it tough. But I can understand if some want a sissy mode.
What the hell is wrong with you? It's not supposed to be a hardcore game. What makes you think it is?

Hardcore game or not, it should involve SOME challenge. Even casual games have some challenge.

Why the hell should you care how someone else plays a sandbox game?
If you've ever watched PaperbatVG's recent videos, you can see that he is one of the few people who refuses to use cheats in the game.
Paraphrasin' here:
Pbat: Ugh, where are these spider noises coming from?
Person 1: Over there!
<the person mines a few blocks and finds a spider dungeon>
Pbat: Wow, how did you know that?
Person 1: Oh, F3.
Pbat: but- that's cheating...
By your logic, we should have TooManyItems (an item spawning screen that comes up when you access the inventory) as default. It doesn't matter if it's ridiculously easy to get to and changes gameplay, if you don't like it, don't use it!
I don't like this idea because I build all of my structures using towering because they are very large. I think it would ruin architecture to remove towering.

Actually, by his logic, the OP shouldn't be trying to eliminate what is an integral playing element for many just to suit his personal taste. The OP is the one trying to change gameplay since the only way pillaring can be removed is to eliminate block-placing, severely decrease height limit, or add structural integrity as a gameplay factor.

I disagree with the OP's idea, but I hate "Don't like it, don't use it!"

Well, that's the only way around the issue short of drastically altering gameplay, so it's justified here. Plus the OP's argument is basically that he doesn't like the game being easy. Logical conclusion is if he doesn't like it easy, he can avoid making it easy.

This thread is so annoying. OP just came to complain, didn't offer any solution to the problem, and the offered solutions: he took without putting any thought, any elaboration . . . It's nice you don't like it, but I think you should make a thread like this when you think of a possible solution, not when the itch to complain strikes.
at height sea level +15 a crow comes to peck your face, killing you with knockback. Yeah, you can build a pillar topped off by a 2x1x1 dirt box, at which point you should just deal with it.
Fixed.

Give spiders better AI range or make them want to climb tall structures.
Increase spawn probability of Spider Jockeys.
Pillaring -> Obsolete

Mobs already know when a block near them is higher than the block that they're standing on, because they jump it.
Spiders will simply, instead of jumping, climb high blocks.
And Ghasts have high AI-range. We don't see any lag issues with them.
