Right now aspects of the game make it too easy. Now I don't object to a superhard mode that fixes this? Do you? Sorry, but I just don't see your logic here, and for multiple reasons:
1. Spiders can now climb walls, and there is a good chance that a flying mob will be coming out soon (probably not by 1.5, but maybe 1.6). True, spiders won't attack if you're on a tall enough pillar, but that's still a consideration.
2. Noobs don't pillar to survive. Trust me. I've gotten a bunch of my friends to play the game, and rather than pillar, they either dig down or flail around in the dark until they die. Nobody pillars for nighttime survival. It just doesn't happen.
3. If you're playing on the harder difficulties, chances are you WANT to face monsters. I personally play on Hard, and on the first night I make sure I've made myself at least a stone sword so I can run around getting tons of monster drops.
4. Digging is a cheaper way to survive. You can break dirt sooner than stone, and you only need to break down 3 blocks then cover yourself until daytime. Is is noobish and lame? Yes. But its cheaper than pillaring, and thus more people are going to take this method.
5. Beds. Most people who play Minecraft know about beds by now. Beds are one of the easiest ways to survive your first night - and all subsequent nights - and are easy to make early on. Plus, they actually look somewhat appealing, and so people are more likely to make something that might fit with their house than an annoying pillar.
6. Out of all the tutorial videos from the major players I've watched (Seananners, X, Yogscast), I have yet to see any of them pillar their way to survive the night. They either keep on trekking or hole up somewhere.
7. You made the argument that its cheap to pillar your way up a mountain rather than dig your way up? Do you realize how incredibly stupid a statement that is? Most people don't just build a pillar to get up a mountain; they might place one block where they need it to get to another ledge, but I've never seen people just build a massive pillar.
I'm sorry, but your argument is foolish. And the fact that you don't seem to be listening to anybody else only makes it worse.
