You are missing the fact that not everyone plays like YOU, and they don't need to.
Sorry, I'm not missing anything. There are various modes for various preferences of gameplay.
What's unreasonable here is for some to expect the quality of SURVIVAL gameplay, which Notch himself said he preferred to be DIFFICLULT, to be watered down to suit the desires of builders who want a tad of excitement.
If the various modes up the number and capacity of threats, there's no reason to not also limit game features that make survival gameplay too easy.
[citation needed]. I don't remember anything about Notch stating all of that, and I looked through his twitter and that isn't there.
Aside from that,
Being able to jump and place blocks under you is a very important part of building. Switching to Peaceful before dying is way more cheap than Building a pillar, yet you are fixating on this aspect of the game.
Address this please. I don't see why this is invalid and you are purposely ignoring it why? It seems you are rather obsessed with milking your gaming ego by removing this, and it doesn't pose much of a problem at all except, of course, it conflicts with the way you think the game should be played, and this is becoming more of a whining thread than anything so I will just report it as a complaining thread since there is no real suggestion here and it will never be implemented anyway.

Simple. I thought of the AI solution later when it came to pillars for night shelters.
What?
But I still object to pillaring for other reasons... like using them to scale cliffs in 30 seconds instead of being forced to hack a trail to the top. It's just not a real-world capability and should be restricted to non-survival mode play.
Who the hell cares what a "real world capability" is when dealing with a game where you carry metric tons of stone and iron around without breaking a sweat?
Do you also think we should be required to build huge stairways of dirt just to get that last little piece of wood out of a tall tree? Should we not be allowed to build out horizontally either, as that can allow us to build out from a cliff and destroy blocks behind us to keep mobs away? I assume you would prefer all blocks have gravity like sand and gravel, to prevent any possibility that someone could build something off the ground and out of the mob's reach?
You might think it a simple issue, but changing it for the reasons you give would call into question the majority of the block-building functions of Minecraft...and honestly it just makes me wonder why you are even playing THIS game?
What do we have here? This sounds like it might be a neat sugges- Oh...It's just a self-absorbed egotistical twatbag ignoring valid points to continue raging for the destruction of an entire gaming population's playstyle for no good reason beyond "I DON'T LIEK IT!"

Do you show children your phallus? Is that what you want them to see?
Free building mode is fine and dandy, but for many people it will ultimately become boring once you've got it figured out. It's like playing a first person shooter in god mode, or giving yourself infinite funds in a strategy game.. a lack of challenge kills the fun.
If I didn't think my suggestion here, and the one to make night pitch black, was in keeping with this philosophy I wouldn't have posted.
The don't do it? Before I got a minimap I used tall pillars to find landmarks. Everyone plays differently and it's not like you actually get a score for surviving yet. I honestly do not understand why people want them to remove parts of the game that don't even affect them. Between the REMOVE PILLARING and MAKE IT SO YOU CAN'T JUST HIDE IN A HOLE IN THE GROUND I don't know whats more stupid.

There's a big difference between "I would rather make the game too difficult than to easy" and your version of "I'm going to make the game hard as hell!!!!"
Especially considering all the things you are complaining about and asking to be removed...were programmed by that same guy...who I doubt wants to **** off most of his customer base, before his game is ever really released, just to satisfy you.
Pro-tip: The difficulty of combat in this game is not why it is popular.
I for one like pillaring. It is a very useful tool, albeit unrealistic. But...
If Notch were to make a way for pillaring to not work, it would probably have something to do with the player's jump height. Make sure the player cannot jump high enough to place a block directly under him. That is, in my view, the only way to truly stop 'pillaring.'
The cons,though are as follows:
1. Not being truly able to build high obelisks ( very popular )
2. It would take forever to climb mountains or cliff faces
3. With the lower jump capability, you would not be able to jump over block high obstacles. I.e. no cliff climbing
I suggest that you keep pillaring.
It's what Minecraft is.

I would rather discuss something than try to listen to somebody plugging their ears screaming "I can't hear you, I believe my way is best, blah blah blah" and ignoring extremely valid points, only to serve to validate his gameplay style and try to enforce it as the standard of gameplay in Minecraft when, of course, a sandbox game has more to it than just building a fort and surviving.
He hates the fact that all of his "hard work" is invalidated by knowing he could just build a pillar to avoid mobs and he wants to get rid of that because he is either feeling invalidated by something that does not matter, or raging at the fact that something so simple is negating his "superior" play style and he serves to destroy it to find some way to feel good about what he has done. If this thread were a girlfriend, it'd do everything but anal.
If this game was realistic like that there would be no creepers, zombies or giant spiders, so they'd be no change in the first place.
Your Desire for realism is hypocritical.
If there were no real world aspects to this game, we could not relate and would not feel any sense of immersion. In ANY fantasy game there are likely to be creatures. That does NOT eliminate the need for aspects of reality.
The question is where does one draw the line in that mix? I'm not calling for the end of pillaring in all modes of game play. I know many like MC for that reason. I don't. I don't play it to farm or ride minecarts. I don't dig for minerals. I like it as an survival/exploration game. I like big worlds to explore and to survive while doing so. I'm just advocating for features (or their elimination) I believe will enhance THAT sort of gameplay.
Maybe some here wouldn't have gotten so pissy if I just advocated for a superhard Survival mode... and let's face it, I'd been playing in close to that mode, and it really isn't that much of a burden to build a real shelter for the night than to pillar up... or play with high fog instead of being able to see threats 1000' away. But then again some are just pissy, or game wimps, and would object to proposing a superhard mode too.

Ah, you are trying to validate yourself into being a "Hardcore Minecraft gamer", now I get where all of the "the game needs to be harder in ways that don't matter" comes from. That's...****ing stupid? If you want it to be harder, download mods. If you don't want to do that, deal with it.
The amount of times you referred to yourself in that paragraph is ****ing disgusting and self-righteous as well.

No, most people wouldn't have a problem with a superhard mode...let's call it "Realistic mode" just for fun.
And you know why people wouldn't have a problem with some new difficulty, as opposed to all the people who hate your apparent desire to implement these things in the current difficulties? It's because Notch has already announced plans for a "Realistic mode" with things like hunger and dehydration and such.
Gee... could it be that because the game was released way before it's final form, that some features were NOT well thought out? Can it be that pillaring has become a cheap trick that defeats the purpose of a SURVIVAL game because the mob AI can't deal with it? And would you complain if Notch changed that AI? Or would YOU then complain that it interfered with what YOU consider YOUR superior play style?
In the end this isn't your or my game. But we SHOULD be able to advocate for what we think is best or needs to be changed. I don't object to a superhard mode that ups the threats and reduces our capabilities. It's the others here who seem intolerant to ANY suggestion that gets rid of features even if they were just accidents left over from early development.
Then why are you bitching to remove things that DON'T EFFECT YOU and that everyone else finds useful just to suit your playstyle?
Oh yeah. Because you're a selfish ****. And you'll ignore this valid question to avoid admitting that to yourself.
This isn't a feature OR an accident. It's a natural, USEFUL consequence (and not for mob-avoidance, pay some ****ing attention) of being able to place blocks. Stop trying to get core gameplay elements removed.
