I've seen several topics on this already, but I'm going to try to put my own spin on it anyways. Just know this idea is a work in progress, and I just thought it up last night.
Cracked Glass and Stained Glass
So my idea is that if glass falls from a height of 4-2 blocks, it cracks. Anything higher than 4 blocks would make it shatter completely and drop a glass shard. I'll go into those later. A one block drop would do nothing to it. Now, when you have cracked glass, you can make stained glass with it. To make cracked stained glass, you get any color dye you want and craft it with glass when red is the red dye like so:
[] []
[] []
Now when you craft it, you have cracked stained glass. You place this in a furnace, and after a while you have stained glass! It wouldn't be gravity-affected, because (Sarcasm alert) obviously in Minecraft normal glass falls, but all other glass doesn't.
Glass Shards
As I've said, when glass falls from a height of 5 or more blocks, it drops a glass shard. These can be used for many things, like making a different type of reinforced glass or traps. Smelting a glass shard will give you molten glass. With this, you can make reinforced glass. However, molten glass has to cool, but not completely solidify back into a glass shard. I haven't figured out how to do this yet, so leave a suggestion!
Crafting recipes when glass shard is :Flint:, cooled molten glass is :Lava:, and weak reinforced glass is :
Ground Spikes:
[] [] []
[] []
You can only place these on the ground obviously, and it does damage while slowing you down when you walk on it. May .5 hearts a second? It wouldn't be that much, but if you jump and fall on it, you'll take 3 hearts damage. I'm not so sure about this part.
Reinforced glass (weak):
It has the strength of stone, and isn't gravity effected.
Reinforced glass (Strong)
It has the strength and explosion resistance of an iron block, also not gravity affected.
Last Thoughts
I'm thinking about adding "bulletproof" glass, which has the properties of obsidian, and uses it in the recipe. I want to thank every single other glass thread, because the people there have brilliant ideas sometimes....
By the way Ygdrasel, FIRE AWAY!
Glass is not affected by gravity in minecraft. Unless you talking about the resource block, whch also makes no sense, becuase you suggested that stain glass NOT be affected by gravity.
A) You didn't specify ANYWHERE before the "sarcasm" that glass would be CHANGED to be affected by gravity (how would you build glass floors and ceilings, or lava lamps on the ceiling supported by glass so the light comes through?)
and :cool.gif: that's not what sarcasm is. Sarcasm is when you say something in a manner that implies you have the opposite intention. Like I can say "Wow... this is a BRILLIANT idea. You must be a freaking genius." and what I really would mean is that this idea isn't brilliant at all.
(though if the sarcasm only applies to the "obviously" part, then it would make sense, but that part wasn't made clear, and there's no reason that you COULDN'T have made it obvious that regular glass should fall and stained glass wouldn't if you had just written your suggestion better)
Welll... Causing glass to fall will iniate a tiny itty bitty problem of many glass roofs/greenhouses/skylights/lava lamps/ underwater tunnels/incinerator setups being utterly destroyed.
Maybe, when this is first implemented, turn the ID of the current glass into unstained "stained glass" ?

Oh, and here. A much simpler method of getting stained glass would be to just dye the sand and smelt the colored sand into stained glass.
