I have multiple ideas rooting off from one central idea, dyeing wood. I was trying to think of an effective way to do this when i thought about dyeing the saplings. I know it sounds a bit goofy but the colored saplings would create colored tree's, which yield colored logs. Those logs can be used for decoration or made into colored planks. Those planks can make all materials the normally can but with an added catch. Say you were making a door, if all the planks are the same color, you get that color door. The same goes for sticks, steps and all other wooden things. Crafting benches would be a little confusing with that.
Those colored sticks would be able to be used for all sticky purposes, such as making tools, fence, ladders and torches. The tools would just be for show, Who doesn't want a pink handle on their diamond pick? Fences and ladders would be that color if all are the same. But torches would make the light the color of the bye. Black light torches anyone? The light given off would have the tint of that color. That might be a tad bit complicated but i think someone can do it, definitely not me. You might even be able to craft a light powerable by redstone .
On a side note, maybe we could get silver ore added and usable for dye. combining it with other dyes would make metallic dyes, which could be used with the wood also.
If you like my idea tell me and keep this thread up so can see it. FTW!
Yeah i know the dying saplings sounds a bit goofy but i was going for efficiency. It could be that you dye the logs then. I just like the idea of different color steps, fence, doors, ect.
You should be able to dye wood planks, wood stairs, stone and stone stairs, kind of like how AdventureCraft does it.

"Minecraft? Realistic? Really? This is a game where you punch trees to get wood, you can make the wood into wooden planks in less than five seconds, and trees don't fall even if you remove a piece of the trunk from the middle. This is a game where animate corpses, giant spiders and exploding green terrorists emerge at night to hunt you down, farm animals run rampant across the countryside, and you can stop the flow of molten lava with a block of snow."
There has already been a suggestion for colored light sources. Dying glass = stained glass, and stained glass used in the recipie for creating a latern would make a latern that produced that color light.
Better idea, paintbrushes. Saves the whole colored sticks and wood and stuff I didn't read. Paint buckets, also. Bucket + Some dye in a liquid-y form= Paint Bucket?
Actually, that might be a bit confusing. Nevermind that.

P.S.-Colored chests.
no, it'd be a mod, because you can't have 20 different colored trees, wood, etc. with a tex pack
You can't make custom crafting recipes with a texture pack

That just isn't worth it.
