So I had just made a rather long trip to collect some materials from another player on the server and I somehow got lost... OK no problem, I'll just whip out my compass and.... BOOM, death by Creeper. Well now my stack blue dye, TNT and several stacks of sandstone as well as several of my diamond tools are now AWAL somewhere in the 3 day walk between my spawn and the other player's area.
My question is how about having a compass point toward your last death point until you reset it by using a bed? That way assuming you spawn back at your base or in familiar territory you can make or pick up another compass and retrieve your scattered items along with various creeper parts.
Yes? No? Other reasonable suggestions?
Also before you say "just get an op to spawn you in some more items." We are running a mostly vanilla server and have refused to allow spawning of items, allowing more of a self satisfying game play.
And what about single player mode?
Why wouldn't you? there's no guarantee that your items would be there by the time you get a new compass and start on your way. Items despawn in what 5 min? Assuming there is someone near the cell to keep it active.
You might be interested in my Lapus Lazuli Compass idea. You can choose the position it points to by right clicking. Originally it was gong to be made from diamond instead of Lazuli blocks, but then I realized that Jack Sparrow's compass is made from Lapis Lazuli, and realized it was a perfect candidate.
Part of the idea is that if you haven't chosen a point it will default to point to the last place you died.
eh, not a fan. I think there should be some way to figure out longitude and latitude other than moving in one direction and seeing how fast or slow your compass adjusts. But I don't really like a point to any location/or last death point.
I like the idea of having a hard to find location, and if someone comes and gets killed in a trap, then they have to find it again, not just get a compass and come right back to your door. Not a problem in smp, but . . . that's what being careful and orienting yourself is all about.
The long distance trip you described to go get valuable items, is just about the most dangerous kind of trip through wildreness. Just the penalties of not being sufficiently careful.
