I think there should be an option in server.properties to not require users to login to minecraft.net. Instead, it will prompt the user to enter a name which they will appear as. They will all use the default skin, or maybe just the skin of whoever has that username if minecraft.net is accessible from the client. Bans can work by IP address. Of course, this would just be an option; servers will still require a minecraft.net login by default.
This will enable people to play multiplayer on a LAN if there is no Internet connection available (i.e. two laptops in a car on an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network, or connected with a crossover cable.) It will also enable people to play when minecraft.net is down (as long as servers have enabled this feature temporarily.)

Should be automatically activated for all servers by default IF minecraft.net is down. That way, people can play multiplayer no matter what minecraft.net is doing, and people who stole the game can only play multiplayer when the site is down.
Zazotak, not sure if that was a joke or not, but the point is that people can't play online AT ALL unless they have payed for the game.
Perhaps, Mojang could run a backup server which the clients are programmed to login through when the first login attempt fails? It would be expensive, but with the amount of copies sold each and every day at 15 Euro, I'm sure it's affordable.
Uh, I bought the game. And how would this increase piracy? Most servers would use the minecraft.net login anyway. And what if you have two laptops in the car and want to play together with an Ethernet crossover cable, or an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network? What do you do then?

It increases piracy because server admins would activate this option to make their server always accessible, allowing pirates to log in and run rampant. The point of the login authentication is to prevent this from happening. If Mojang allowed this, nobody would pay for the game. Do you really want Notch to cease updates because he lost his funding? I THINK NOT!

"Once you've bought the game, it's yours. No DRM."
Wouldn't this count as a type of DRM?
