With the advent of weather, this suggestion is pertinent.
I feel that forests should become more dynamic, changing entities. A cool addition would be if leaves grew again if you cut them back, possibly even in different shapes. I would really love it if trees had seasons, where their leaves would periodically decay and grow back. Changing colors would be optional. While the leaves decay, it would be neat if they dropped saplings. Further, I think that unattended dropped saplings - from any source - should have a chance to be automatically planted instead of disappearing when it's time for the dropped item to decay. When the sapling was checked to see if it should grow, if there's not enough room, there should be a chance that it will be destroyed as well.
I also think that leaves should still have a chance of dropping saplings if they are destroyed through fire, and I think that saplings should be immune to destruction by fire if the block they are on is dirt. This suggestion is motivated by the real life forests where fire is an integral part of their life cycle. The other Minecraft day, I was wandering around a forest and I came across a pool of lava that was just under the ground. I more or less forgot about it until later, when I heard the sound of a fire burning. A fire I did not set. I assume that this pool of lava caught something nearby on fire, because soon the entire forest was burning down. As it burned, I was powerless to stop it, and I knew that this once forested area was going to become a plain. But I did think it'd be neat if the forest could grow back, and this would be an excellent mechanic by which to do that.
I say that this is a relevant suggestion in relation to weather, because Notch mentioned that he wanted to add lightning. If he did so, forest fires would be a natural extension of that, and in the aforementioned real-life forests wherein fires support their continued growth, lightning is often a key factor.
Exactly, This is a good idea, someone even made a mod for Sapplings Dropping From Trees On Their Own and replanting themselves, I think all this would be good

These guys make awesome art for Mods (Items, New Blocks and Mobs)
I will be using them soon

I know it's not strictly relevant, but I was playing on my usual SMP server the other day, and planted a tree (underground, but well-lit). After fertilising it with bonemeal, I decided to trim some of the leaves. However, they kept growing back! At first I thought this was just lag, but then new leaves grew where there had been none at all, too!
I thought there had been a leaf-growing update, but haven't seen this since on any trees. I guess it was just some weird glitch.
You know, now that you mention that, I think I had something similar happen to me in similar circumstances (an underground tree fertilized with bonemeal). Anyway, I think it'd be neat if it became a sort of 'ascended glitch', because a living, dynamic forest would be amazing.

That mod sounds like half of what I want already! Do you know where I could get that?
That's an excellent point, I hadn't considered that. All told though, I don't think it'd be too bad, since they'd have to stop at desert biomes and shorelines.
