Hey everyone. So yeah, I'm one of those annoying jerks who has way more than just a couple of ideas and just can't keep them to himself, so forgive me if I come on strong. =)
My first idea (of many) is something I think would be very useful for many people, but it wouldn't be without it's setbacks (more on the programming side of things than on the player's end). I was thinking that it would be fantastic if the left and right click functions could be separated to two different items of the player's choice, rather than just having left click as "hulk smash" and right click as "do stuff".
I actually can't think of a single item in the game that has left and right click do two differing things, but picture this - Left Click = Shovel, Right Click = Pick. You KNOW you always get a little rock and a little dirt, so rather than switching back and forth all the time, just use the different buttons. How about for those of us who do the whole dig 'n build things, knocking out a few blocks here and replacing them almost right away with something you actually wanted there? Left Click Dig, Right Click Place Block? Or maybe Making the left mouse use the hoe to till soil, and the right mouse plant seeds? I'm sure my point's across.
I'm sure this would require quite the change in the game's core programming, but I don't claim to be a programmer, so I'm not certain. The first problem one might see arise here is that right click won't open chests or use things any more, right? Well, that's what your HAND is for, no? (It was making me giggle how I opened my wooden door with an axe!) To make this suggestion more feasible, I'd also propose that, added to the nine-slot equipment bar to the very right end will be a slot that you simply cannot equip an item to, and will always be set to your hand (selectable via mouse wheel or number '0'). Your hand will have the dual purpose of Left Click = hulk smash and Right Click... well, Right Click = Do Stuff. Open chests, doors, play with switches, etc.
I guess my suggestion is just the words of a guy too lazy to constantly roll around his mouse wheel, but I dunno, I think it would be a nice addition is all I'm sayin'. =)

Firstly, I guess I should welcome you to the forums, seeing as how this is your first post.
Secondly, I should warn you that people are prone to flaming for horrible suggestions or things that have been suggested a ton of times before.
Thirdly, Laziness is also frown upon.
That said, let's move on to the post's analysis.
No.
This would take a LOT of work from the coders to implement in the game. And as you said, there wouldn't be a way to use chests and stuff like that. What? Empty handed? No. Not gonna work, because if you need to run away, and quickly get to your house and close the door, you'll HAVE to hurry to switch to your empty hands and close the door, which, might just be a bit too long, letting a creeper in, blowing your work to smithereens.
It was a nice suggestion I'll admitt, well thought of, well structured, so you show promise, but still, no.
Here's a few examples of items that use both clicks;
The Bow.
- Left Click = Swing the bow around, to strike in melee
- Right Click = Shoot arrows (if you have any).
The Fishing Rod.
- Left Click = Swing the Rod around, to strike in melee
- Right Click = Cast your line.
Basically, it looks like all you're really using is the right click, right? But no. This is about survival, and if you were a survivalist, like Steve (the avatar you're playing as), you'd try to use anything you can make as a weapon to defend yourself. You need to be able to hit monsters even with things that aren't designed for combat, or at least not for melee combat.
For your idea of "break stone block, break dirt block, break stone block, break dirt block". I should point out that it is highly improbably that you hit such an alternating pattern between dirt and stone. At best, you have stone, dirt, stone, that's it. You can just ignore the dirt and hit it with your bare hands, since it's just one block.
Plus, since you can't target 2 blocks at once, all you have to do is switch to the other tool, if you really want to use all the tools. What? Too lazy to roll the mouse wheel? There are keyboard shortcuts. Just place your tools at the same location every time so you can memorize them, and keep one hand on the mouse (to use the tools, or fight) and one hand on the keyboard (to access and choose which tools you want more quickly).
All this is is yet another "Make the game easier/faster for me" thread, which are VERY frowned upon here.
However, if you're interested in 2 handed combat, there are mods for that in the Released Mods section. I am unaware at the moment if they are updated to the latest version, but yes, there are mods for that. It might even allow you to wield two different tools, not just swords.
Well Amoe, thanks for not being harsh about it (I was kind of worried after reading through some of the other suggestions). While I totally agree with your logic ("swing bow to strike melee, shoot bow") I figure that that would be more effectively accomplished by using a sword to swing with a melee attack, for a couple of reasons. First, I'm certain that if you used a bow or fishing rod to melee-strike something in defense, realistically you would instantly snap said tool in half, and since all items except swords do the same melee damage as your fists anyway, it would have been just as easy to punch the mob.
I didn't clarify in my first post that if you had nothing equipped to one hand, but a tool to the other, you could simply punch with one click and use the tool with the other, but I understand that you are quite right about the excessive difficultly required to program a feature like this (I realized it all along, but should have compared this difficultly to the total worthlessness that the feature amounted to when all was said and done, lol).
Also, in regards to "Make the game easier/faster for me", while I admit that that's fair that you'd say that, I would say that if you think about it, having the mouse wheel quickly switch between tools could be considered the exact same thing (except yes, I know - it's easy to throw in and doesn't require an overhaul of the programming to give that little, insignificant bit of convenience).
In any case, I suppose I'm done arguing for this idea, because now that I've said it out in a public place like this, hearing it outside of my own head makes me realize just how pointless a feature like this really is. So, sorry for wasting your time and all that, and thanks for the welcome and constructive crit, Amoe! =)

I would just like to add that it would really work either, if you're going to add realism to the mix.
Why?
Well let's see... I'm holding a sword in my left hand, and I'm holding a shovel in my right hand. Let me dig a trench in one minute with my one handed shovel (it's not a trowel, it's a shovel). Most tools would require two hands to wield and use properly. Plus, the bow is clearly a 2-handed weapon. All RPGs make it a 2-handed item, so you can't use a bow AND a shield.
However, thinking of that just now made me realise that maybe dual-wielding tools might be interesting in terms of the smaller tools offered in the enhanced 2x2 crafting grid mod. I suggest you go find it, in the Released Mod section, and suggest it there, if it hasn't been done already.
