You know how in real life, miners use shafts to go deep underground? Well, I think that there should be shafts for Minecraft!
How they would work
Shafts would resolve the issue of ladders only being able to carry one person. They could carry up to 9 people in just one shaft! Shafts would be powered by a lever which had three options: Up, Stop, and Down. They would be powered by redstone-powered Pullers (Forgot name) that would raise and lower them. You could enter one by right-clicking on it.

How to make
Due to the Shaft's size, creation would be somewhat complicated. First, there would be the Floor/Ceiling. You would need to make two of these.
Design:
The second part would be the Supporters, which would also include the Lever. (L = Lever, B = Blank)
Design: B
BLB B
These two things would be combined in a matter like this (S = Supporters, F = Floor/Ceiling):
F

In order to make these work, we would need two Pullers. In order to make these pullers, we would need to make wire. However, since Redstone Wire cannot go vertically, we make a real Wire. (R = Redstone) R R R
This would equal 16 Wires. Now, we make two Pullers to connect the Wires with. (W = Wire) W W
W
Now, make a 3x3xD hole, D being how deep you want to go. Calculation for how much wire you'd need to get to the bottom: W = 2d + 2. Make a exit out. Now, place the two pullers right by the center row with one on the left and one by the right, like this (H = Hole, P = Puller, G = Ground):
GHHHG
PHHHP
GHHHG
Connect 2 wires to the Pullers, like this (W = Wire):
GHHHG
PWHWP
GHHHG
Connect the two wires to the bottom. Don't worry, wires are also climbable. Put the Shaft on a block 4 layers below the Pullers. You have now made a working Shaft!
Uses
-Instead of making annoying stairs to your mine, use a shaft!
-Use a shaft as a elevator for buildings!
- You could use the Puller and Wires to make a rope instead of a ladder.
So, what do you think? Take the poll to share your results.
if it's 3x3x3, and has a floor AND a ceiling, that means that the room for people is only 1 block high. Characters are 2 blocks high, so that would actually kill them while they're in it.
What is this whole "ladders only holding one person" deal? Any number of people can use a ladder. The person above or below you is going to get off when they reach the destination anyway.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
I agree with everything except for the ceiling. It's important to watch for ores you might have missed and you won't suffocate. Other than that, brilliant!

You have a point, but shafts would carry up to 9 people down, faster.

I'm not sure if you've seen them, but you can make really nice elevators using a boat. Although they can't really stop at certain levels, they're pretty cheap to build. I use them in my mines and they work like a charm and are really fast. This seems kinda expensive, although it would be nice to control it more like this, the boat elevators are quick, cheap, and fast to build. I think Notch said something about elevators and ropes and how it would tie into minecarts. I don't know though.
Eh...seems pretty unbalanced (you get 16 wires per creation AND they are also climable?) and way too different to be only used in creating elevators. If it was more multipurpose and balanced I would try to like it a bit more.
But for now all I can focus on is that I don't think I've ever seen the word shaft used to mean elevator...are you sure you aren't confusing the "shaft" that a lift travels in with the actual lift itself?
Good idea. We need elevators in minecraft. Elevators would facilitate quick transportation from the top of the map to bedrock, without the need for annoying ladders. Elevators are also more fancy, because what office building has a ladder to get you to the different levels? Also, the wires could be used for other things, such as a storage elevator, pretty much combining the elevator and a chest in the crafting box, or even a track elevator, a platform with tracks on top that can transport a minecart from one level to another, and also make for some awsome roller coasters (the minecart's momentum would be preserved when going onto the track, thus requiring a wall to be made in front of the track elevator so it doesn't just slide off. Furthermore, the wires could be used for hooking minecarts together. It could be used for a variety of purposes, but to list them all I would have to take up half the page(If I haven't already).

I see what you did there.

When you make tracks, you get sixteen pieces of track. And when I think of wires, I think of ropes...
