I`ve played Minecraft since about 1.2 (alot), but today I stumbled upon some Youtube footage from the indev-version of the game. Some of the early features really appealed to me, and looking back at them, I surely miss them in the current version:
1. Being able to choose the size of the world generated.
Infinite lands to explore. Really cool. But adding the possibility of having a finite landmass to explore is also appealing to many. I like the small, normal and huge or whatever settings are in indev, but having a couple or three larger sizes to choose from would have been exciting. I`ve played the small island version of the generator, and it`s really cool. This should be an easy feature to put into the game, and would only make the game appealing to more people. No downsides!
2. Hardcore mode.
When you`re dead, you don`t respawn. I`ve even seen Notch speak of this himself. Another easy feature to put into the game, and as above, gives the game a broader appeal.
3. Floating bodies of land.
As this seems like a feature that has meant alot to the game (the ability to create floating islands in indev and Notch not wanting to make flying objects fall) it should be more of them in Minecraft. I stumble upon them in my worlds from time to time, but they are, with a couple of exceptions, small and uninspiring. I don`t want there to be floating islands everywhere in my worlds, but here and there you would stumble upon these floating bodies. They looked really cool in the game when they where there, and they suit the game well. I see this is more a matter of personal taste than the two optional enhancements above, but I really think most people would love to find a floating island to explore, and I don`t mean two dirtblocks upon one another with a tree sticking out of it. Maybe a waterfall dropping from it`s edge? Trees on top and maybe some caves inside them? Just what you would find anywhere else.
Hope I`m not the only one missing these things guys `n gals?
PS: I don`t understand why skis are still missing in the game. You`re from Sweden, Notch...
Were some of the pointers hard to understand or what?
1. Implementation of optional generation of your world. A finite world from size 1 being small to whatever lets say 5 being a lot larger than large in indev OR, of course like today, infinite world generation.
2. The hardcoremode will be implemented sooner or later I guess, but it should be such an easy addition to the game. Would have been nice to see it sooner rather that later.
3. The floating islands is the hardest of these to implement I guess as the matrix for generation of worlds would have to be tampered with. But you have to agree, they would have looked great!
Thanks man. Will read up about the seeds and how it works. Just used them randomly in the past with no knowledge on how they work. Tried it and a fatass floating island hovered above my head. The pointer about the size of a generated world though, haven`t read anything about that being reimplemented in the game. Would be great for lots of the smaller mp servers too. Nice to bump into someone once in a while. And just the satisfaction of completion when you have explored like the whole island. But of course that`s a matter of taste, but nice to have it optional.
So you can take pride in saying that you've FINALLY explored all there is to explore. And it makes it so those with weaker computers can set a limit that they know won't make their computers lag.
2: Notch said he would add hardcoremode. So it`s going to happen most likely. And ragequitting when you finally got your diamodgear isn`t an easy decision to make. And it`s easy to implement.
3: Seeds fix this. Some seeds generate lots of floating islands so not an issue.
1: I really like the infinite worlds, but it would have been nice to play something finite in between. And the beauty is you can make infinite finite worlds.
1 and 2 are first of all easy to implement. Try thinking outside your own desires, and be objective. Some mp servers would really benefit of a limited world though limiting the use of an infinite world is an option, but not the same. Easier for kids, fun for a multiplayersession only lasting a day or whatever and so on. I really like the game as is, but optional variables that are easy to implement to this kind of random sandboxgame should be considered. I`m not exactly asking for a tickbox for laserswords on and off in the game.
...and people with slower computers could benefit from it like you say. It`s about making the game accessible and versatile within a set frame without compromising it`s integrity. And the limited world OPTION really don`t.

Skiingpoles...

The skis ....... suck!
Glacier is a common one.
Lol.
That's the only reason I can see.
2: Ragequit upon 1st death.
3: Mods.
