Traveling too far (mainly in singleplayer), in my experience always caused a fair amount of lag, thus I, and most players are always confined to a small area, my suggestion (based on a world I had, where the top part was very laggy because of my extensive building, but the lower part that was very fast) is that with a command (say, f7 if that's not occupied) will create a infinite vertical wall of fog at a said area, this will split the map in two sections (from where you are pointing, this will let you also split the map into many blocks), passing through them would have a loading time like entering the netherworld, it will have a loading time, in hopes to reduce lag caused by extensive exploration. The wall will only be as high as the maximum height of blocks so that it can easily be covered by a gate of some sort.
To prevent, in multiplayer of this being abused.
-Multiplayer only/ A yes or no window will appear)
-Two parallel walls must be atleast 40 blocks away.
A little confusing, but I think I get the idea here. Not sure how many people would bother to use it, but if it did successfully reduce lag I could see something along these lines for players with computers that can't handle a huge render distance.
A few minor tweaks:
--Allow the borders to only fall between chunks (so that no chunk is being cut in two and crashing the way Minecraft loads maps). Yes this means that they have to go in semi-specific areas, like they could only be placed at 16 block increments or whatever, but as long as players take that into account when building, it's not a problem.
--For multiplayer, preventing abuse is a simple matter. Just make it something that only admins and op'ed players can do.
The only major problem I see is that an infinite wall is just that: infinite. Placement might be good in one area (say you put it right outside your town where you spend all your time), but it's going to extend forever in each direction and the chances of cutting through someone's project are extremely high no matter where you put it.
One way to solve this, if it could be done, would be for admins to simply section off groups of chunks to turn into another "world" or whatever you want to call it. Instead of an infinite wall going in each direction, individual sections could be separated from each other.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways

I see another way. Make it so that when you choose a chunk border, it only affects the two chunks on either side of it. That way, it WOULD be infinite, but only vertically, not horizontally.
Granted, you'd have to repeat the process for every border you want to place, but hey, if it reduces lag, a little bit of work on our part isn't going to kill us... unless a creeper comes up on the "other side" of the border while we're placing them. XD
i think its a great idea!
i wanted something like this for awhile, cause i am currently making a HUGE custom/adventure map,
its not lagging yewt, but im only like 2% done so it probably will lag eventually

Checking already gives you 25% addiction.
