I was simply thinking it would be nice to have some sort of device to automate mining, or other tasks. And I couldn't think of a better way then an automaton. They should be difficult to craft and slow, and run on coal perhaps? They could have small inventory boxes to store any valuables they find, along with dirt and rock. They would dig in a forward/downward pattern and emit light. So every so often you would have to run down into the mine and refill and unload them.
They could also be used for defense! Hand them a sword and they attack hostiles in a 10 block radius. They could be destroyed and drop very little.
Basically, they would be inefficient and slow, but they would do basic functions that you may not want to do.
I was thinking their parts could be crafted then they would have to be assembled in the area you want them and they would then be given and object (Either Pickaxe or sword (Or perhaps bow?)) and do their job in that region.
For the crafting, I thought perhaps something like this.
= redstone
=Iron brick (9 iron ingots)
Head
Body
Arms (perhaps one at a time?)
Legs (Again, one at a time)
Also, not only would this be cool and helpful, it would get minecraft away from medieval myth times. I think it needs to stay away from ghosts and goblins, and not stay in one point in time. This would serve to satisfy all those needs.
Seems that people on Minecraft cease to understand this. This game isn't trying to be futuristic nor modern.
Ok sure, but it also shouldn't be in any one specific era. Nor should it be a swords and sorcery like game. I don't want to fights ghost, or ghouls. Skeletons are as close as I want to come to such a thing.

It isn't in any specific era. It IS adhering to a specific standard: Low-tech simplicity.
There are no ghosts or ghouls - rejoice!

Well what you want isn't what the game is.
And just who are you to say that Minecraft shouldn't be a sword and sorcery game. I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were Notch or otherwise a developer of the game that has the power to decide what the game can and can't be.

Taking trolling to a whole new level, one post at a time.

Fair enough. Never said it was.
Ok, I was simply stating my opinion. In my opinion it shouldn't be a sword and sorcery game. There are enough of those, this game is too unique and awesome to reduce to such a tired genre. (Still just my opinion) And I never even insinuated I had any sort of power over the game, simply offering my opinion and suggestion in the suggestions forum.

Ok, that makes sense.
My only reason for mentioning such a thing is that it there are lots of suggestions for stuff like that; Trolls, dragons, things like that. (Especially for the Nexus) And I just don't like the idea of that at all. As I said, I like the uniqueness of this game for it to just be another sword and sorcery. And I DO rejoice that there are none as of now.

Dragons are a possibility as stated by Notch. Goblins too. And pigmen.
And it's been called the Nether for ages now.

Not all robots need to be modern/futuristic, you can have fantasy themed ones like golems which are essentially the same thing. Steampunk sometimes has plenty of primitive robots too that are at least somewhat metallic.
I would say that the idea still seems a little overpowering though (since it'd basically be an automatic resource farmer) but I guess the cost to make it might balance it out. Maybe have it powered by coal to add an extra limitation. It would at least make single player mode less tedious.

I knew about the dragons. And this is somewhat ok. Dragons are kinda cool sometimes. And pigmen are fine too.
I know, but "The Nexus" is also from star trek, and wikipedia says "aka The Nexus" on the nether. So I like calling it the nexus. :tongue.gif:

So, opinions? Is this idea any good?
Not an Option.
