Flares are a mobile light source that you carry with you. Similar to lanterns, they serve a purpose of lighting up only the area around you (covers 14 blocks with light around you, the same light level as a torch.)

There could be alternatives for this, feel free to expand.
The coal is there because that's whats keeping it light, the flint and steel is there because something needs to ignite it. Right clicking would 'ignite' the flare.
Flares would be GREEN, if it were to be red or orange, it would be hard to tell the difference between a torch or redstone torch. It is a possibility that since its green, it would give off green light. If not, the torch would appear glowing green, while giving off normal light.
Lit flares would burn out if fully submerged in water.
Flares would burn out after about 5 minutes.
Lit flares can be thrown. (right click). They will stick to whatever block they land on, following the criteria of which blocks torches can be placed on. Hit the flare and pick it up to hold it again. If the flare lands on a block that it can not be placed on, it just becomes an unobtained item.
This is my ideas and details about it. Before you flame on me, I know this has been suggested before, and I'm very welcome to any alternations to any of my ideas. Thanks for your time.
