I think it would be a good idea for the developers to add a Lantern item to Minecraft. This would allow players to hold the lantern and light up a small area around him/her when exploring caves. The Lantern item should also have a health system as well. When the player has his/her lantern out, then the item's health will go down over time. This will also make the light of the lantern weaker. I know the torch has the same purpose, but It would be nice to have an option of using either of the two. I think its a pretty cool idea so far. what do you think?
Lanterns where uggested by notch himself and where originaly supposed to be in the halloween update, but because of lack of time, and complaints notch decided they are something for a future update. So nice sugggestion, notch is working on them.

Holding a lantern in your hand would be cool, but there are other uses for them as well. Here's my idea for lanterns:
A lantern would be like a torch except for four things: they can be turned on/off by redstone, they only project light in one direction (about 90ยบ worth of one direction), they can be used underwater, and they can be tinted with gems (minable, and coming in several different colors/varieties). Tinted lanterns would be awesome for decoration purposes, but they would also have a really cool function. They could be used in conjunction with light sensors in information circuits that are currently completely made of redstone. The light sensors could be used for light in general (eg to detect what time of day it is), or they could be crafted with gems so they only detect one color of light. So, in a circuit, redstone would activate a colored lantern (say a green one). The green light would shine on a light sensor that was made with an emerald, and the sensor would send out a positive (on) signal through redstone. In this fashion information in redstone could be projected over gaps in the ground or over water or lava (where players and mobs can't walk). Going back to earlier, automatic lights could be made so that when the sun goes down, lanterns around your base turn on.
Dyes + Lanterns doesn't really make sense, which is why I suggested gems for tinting. And I don't think the lantern for carrying would need to be made differently. But yeah..
