I believe Notch said somewhere that if backpacks were implemented, the default carrying capacity would be lowered, can't remember where though.
So really it would be your choice, I don't normally find myself running out of space, unless due to reasons of cobblestone, which is why I either build structures with it, or just throw it in lava. Problem with building with cobblestone is that it looks ugly and sort of hurts my eyes, though. And if I did have a minecraft backpack I would probably just fill it with extra tools and the like, but I always carry around a workbench or at least some planks so it wouldn't make that much of a difference to me.
Back on topic, I don't think there would be all too much use for a backpack, but I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea, and wouldn't mind if it was put in. But I would be just as fine without as I would with.
