On the Mojang team's Twitter, I saw them bouncing the idea of using sneaking as a blocking mechanism. I liked the idea, and I thought up how it could work to make battles more exciting.
It'd be timing-based: When you hit Sneak, you block 90% of the damage and are not able to attack. At around 0.2 seconds, this drops to 50%. Upon hitting the 0.4-second mark after holding Sneak, a mere 25% of damage is blocked. This shrinks to a mere 10% after 0.6 seconds, and stays there until you release Sneak. From there, you must wait 1 second plus however long you held Sneak divided by 2 if over 4 seconds. Sneaking would not apply to explosion damage.
If Shields are ever added, they add to the time that you can guard, up to 5 seconds for Diamond.

Maybe you shouldn't be able to swim while sneaking, so you cant block a skeleton's arrows without possibly drowning.
These values are all up to suggestion, but I feel they're balanced. If you feel otherwise, suggest new values below! As this is my first suggestion, I'm open to inevitable criticism.
EDIT: If you rapid-press sneak, you lose the ability to sneak for 5 seconds.

Spontaneous combustion - one of the many hazards of travel between worlds.
The problem with this is that people could rapidly click shift and become invulnerable to all attacks but creepers TNT and ghasts. Maybe you shouldn't be able to swim while sneaking, so you cant block a skeleton's arrows without possibly drowning.

I like the idea of not being able to swim. And yeah, fixed that problem in the initial post.
