Electricity. In Minecraft it would act like redstone only powers more advanced and powerful things. I'm not saying that people should add electric fans and computers and stuff I mean uses that suit Minecraft. How? The examples below can show.
Redstone Changes:
Redstone can now be placed on walls. It can also be used to transfer electricity.
Electricity-Redstone relationship.
Redstone is an infinite power source that is able to power simply devices and connect them. Electricity is made from a generator and has a limited supply that always needs to be refilled and can power a variety of specific objects. Electricity used Redstone circuits as pathways to power things.
Electric Generators.
There are 4 forms of generating power sources. One is the furnace. By placing coal in both slots it will create "Electricity". It can't be removed from the furnace unless connected by a redstone circuit. You can make furnaces devoted to producing electricity to power your place.
The second is a Water-based water Generator. It's made out of a boat, furnace and wood in this form:
[] [Boat] []
[] []
Place it near flowing water to slowly create electricity. It's infinite but dreadfully slow.
The third is geothermal energy. Simply place a lava bucket to be burnt by coal will create ENORMOUS amounts of energy. WARNING! Using this energy will burn any flammable object nearby and will consume the lava and bucket after energy production.
The fourth is killing pigs. This may sound crazy but the energy stored in porkchops from the pig still is enough to power stuff. Think of it as a starter energy for those who started in their world.
Electricity as an On/Off light source.
This is a redstone torch powered by electricity. Now to use electricity simply connect a redstone circuit to a generator to the Iron Rod to let Electric energy light up a large area. This gives a powerful light source that could light 30 blocks! Consumes one Electric unit per 5 minutes.
Electricity as a weapon.
By simply placing a sword in a furnace to be smelted by coal with an electric unit already inside will 'charge' the sword. The unit is consumed and the sword now has more damage but less durability. The weaker the sword the worse the durability loss is.
Electricity as a longer redstone circuit.
It can still power the objects redstone can but it can reach almost 40 blocks of wire alone.
I think the idea is balanced enough. The generators are balanced each. One is volatile, one gives a balanced amount of energy but is limited, one gives infinite amounts but is painfully slow and the other is very abundant but really pathetic. It's uses are good. I don't have anything for more uses for Electricity so I encourage you people to make your own!

A man can only understand the worth of his present for all eternity once he gets to see his future and past just once.
Sorry, but the medical term for death is zero brain activity or electricity. I highly doubt there'd be any, harvestable or otherwise, usable electricity in dead pig.

Hm. Maybe we can break that law of physic and let a tiny piece of chemical energy stored in a porkchop that usually restores our health into an electrical form?

Chemical Energy =/= Electricity
Electricity is a discharge of friction. Chemical Energy is Enzymes and/or Proteins. Try again, Brosef.
Meh, we can break a few laws. I can already fill my inventory with over 6 megatonnes of stone. What's the big deal? xD
Anyway, electricity is a no-go for me. We already have redstone, which works perfectly good for making circuits and powering mechanisms and stuff. Feel free to suggest new redstone mechanisms and whatnot, but don't suggest electricity.

Don't pick your nose with a pickaxe. Use a shovel.

Electricity is sort of a power-up of redstone. It's technically still redstone but stronger and can be used for more advanced stuff.

But if Redstone is a circuit, and Electricity is a circuit, then wouldn't they technically be the same thing in Minecraft? and how are you gonna "Beef Up" Redstone? Increase the range? Sorry, but we have NOTNOT's for that.

The addition of Electricity gives the MC forums something new to suggest about no? Also new system=New stuff=Everyone can think of new stuff=Everyone is win.

i would change redstone entirely, make it actually run of power sources making players actually have to think about how there going to power there machines. maybe a new system
Redstone is only used for moving power from point A to point B
Several Devices will create power, such as windmills, waterwheels, geothermal energy (a device you place by lava), Coal power, steam power, solar power, even oil if its implemented
each device will have a different power output, the higher the out put the further the current will go BUT some objects require more power then others.
Windmill produce 5 energy
every 5 pieces of redstone drop the energy level by 1, so by the time you get to 25 blocks away the energy level will be 0.
Doors could require around 3 energy to open. therefore you need a windmill or other device to power up the switch 7 or less blocks away.
another device that could be made is a battery, it will hold a certain amount of energy output for a specific amount of time
i was inspired in this idea by another thread but i cant remember its name

Hm. Maybe you didn't notice that mine cart boosters don't abide by the law of physics to begin with? So why not break another law?
