I have found that dungeons are not only rare, but you also have to mine into a wall if you think you have found one. I myself (amongst many others on this forum) have only found 1 dungeon.
I propose the idea of above ground dungeons, not above ground dungeons that are in a mountain, but dungeons that spawn in an open field. They would keep the shape, contents, and so forth of underground dungeons, but in an open field. The only difference to the design is there would be a wooden door in the middle of one of the sides (unless the light coming through the doors still burns zombies), so you can get in without mining, and during the night the door would open, and the zombies would eventually wander out into the open.
This way would allow for very little code changes, and more rare objects aside from portals in the overworld.
This sounds like complete ****. You may as well wish for a chest to appear next to your spawnpoint with stacks of every item in, just so you don't have to actually do any work to find them.
Dungeons are rare. They're supposed to be rare. Look harder, if you're so desperate for them. I spent months before I found my first one, but now I stumble onto them fairly regularly during my normal spelunking bouts. They are (almost?) always attached to a cave system.
I'm not saying make them spawn everywhere, i'm saying KEEP them rare... just like portals. It makes the world more diverse, and while yes... it COULD spawn next to spawn points, but that would (obviously) be VERY VERY VERY rare.
