The Multiplayer crowd will greatly enjoy having clothing to show off to their friends and enemies on their servers. (Strange how both get the same treatment.) Role Playing servers will have a huge benefit from clothing.
A large portion of players enjoy collecting items, or just having cool things. This would appeal to those people, and achievements could even be added in for them!
It would be another use for wool and dyes!
Allows for in-game character customizing!

Faction colors, or team colors for games like spleef.
Any other use for clothes is better done by editing your skin texture because there will be more possibilities.
Clothing Specific Plants and mobs:
This suggestion would not require the addition of any more mobs or many plants. Currently the multi-colored sheep varieties of sheep and special mobs and plants cover the dye area. (However a technicolor sheep could be very cool.) One plant that would be needed for this suggestion is the hemp plant.
Hemp would just need to be a re-skin of wheat. It would need lots of sun-light to grow and a minimum amount of water. Hemp would act the same as wheat, have one yield per hemp plant and drop a random amount of seeds. Hemp would not be able to grow underground or indoors, even under glow stone.
The Clothing (Finally):
There would be two main types of clothing and one half cloth, half armor.
Hemp: Hemp could be used to make all four articles of, in this case itchy, clothing. The hat would look a lot like a cartoon chinese farmer's hat, as if made from straw. The shirt would look like a drug rug, and the pants would look like the pant equivalent of a drug rug. I'm not sure what hemp boots would look like, but probably something like an extremely uncomfortable pair of sandals.
Wool: Wool could be used to make cotton type clothing. Wool hats would look like a beanie. The shirts would look like normal shirts and pants would look like baggy gray sweatpants. Wool shoes would look like cloth wrapped around feet. Wool would of course have the option of being different colored. The two methods of coloring wool clothing would be crafting the article with dye or creating the article with dyed wool.
Leather: Leather would not change it's appearance, however it would be able to be died black or white by dye in a similar way to wool.
Creating the Clothing
All clothing would be created the same way.

Dyeable clothing would be dyed by dyeing the wool or leather before it is used to make the article of clothing or dyeing the article of clothing after it is made.
Clothing would have no practical application, except to please the eye!
So there you have it! Please comment as I spent a lot of time on this! Try to be constructive and don't troll me. You *****. And yes, John, I am talking to you.
i suggested the same thing...why is everyone thinking that...its a way to change your skin """IN-GAME""" instead of, going to the file, changing it for about 3-10 minutes and then going back in-game...
