Now, look me in the eye and say, " I have built a tool out of 3 cubic metres of a raw material". That's what you do in Minecraft, which is a bit of an issue.

I propose shards. Bits of a raw material, to make crafting tools more logical.
1. What are shards?
Shards are broken raw materials like bits of wood. These would be used to create tools. I would say 1 block = 3 shards?
Now, to balance out resource usage, your tools would have to be weaker, as you could make more of them.
2. What's the use?
The use would be reducing 3 cubic metres to make one pick-axe to closer to 1 cubic metre. This means reduced materials needed to be used.
3. Uh huh. So you want me to smash my diamond into 'shards'?
Well, yes and no. Yes, because all forms of broken materials are 'shards', but no because they would be appropriately named. You won't have, 'Shard of Cobblestone'. You would have 'Bit of Rock' .
4. I like my tools the way they are.
Well, this probably won't stop them from working. Save your diamonds! 1 diamond p/pick. No more 3 diamonds gone.
5. Well, what if I decide I have enough tools? That I don't need shards?
Well, you would need an 'Un-Crafting' table. Shards are there for good reason.
6. But Diamonds and Iron are already small!
That's why I propose that you get:
A) Uncut diamonds, so you can separate it to make small, 'cut' diamonds.*
:cool.gif: More Iron per ore block. 'Nuff said.
7. So shards are like, small materials? Can I place them?
No, that would be more like 1/8th blocks instead. This is a separate discussion idea.
Aren't you able to carry 64 cubic meters of stone in one hand?

Welcome to the forums, by the way. I'll be your brutally honest dream-crushing critic for...Well, your entire stay. So make your ideas good ones. [Diamond]
Well in real life i dont think there is that much of whatever (ore) is in 16x16 cubic metres
but in minecraft there is so do you think it would be correct to do this
also you cant fix something that isnt broken (looking at the subject)
Personally I'd prefer to use 300 cubic meters of material to make a tool that lasts 100x the strength of the current tools. You'd barely get any stone or coal out of a wooden pickaxe, and stronger tools would wear off even faster. I don't want to end up carrying out three times as many tools just to make things a little more "realistic". In a world where you can only take things apart in cubic meters, that's what you need to put into making your tools.
I dunno, I personally wouldn't mind some sort of recycling system for certain items. Say if you have an iron breastplate or leggings that're about to break. Pop it in the furnace and melt it down to a single ingot of iron.

TL;DR
craft blocks into 'shards' to make tools that way.
* I know it doesn't work this way. Just sayin'.

Well, yes. This sort of rendered the entire post useless.

I imagine people supporting this idea are that whiny in their head.
