Now All Magnetic Blocks, would have a "Magnetic Aura"
All Non-Magnetic Blocks would have a "Magnetic Aura" of 0
How would this work :
Now this would work similar to a torches light radius, except it doesn't light up
it starts off as strong as possible when comming from the source, but then diminishes when it goes away from the source
Example :
So let's say that Iron Ore would have a magnetic aura of 5, when not in that 5 block vicinity, it would act like a normal magnet, but when you enter that 5 block vicinity, it would be slowly attracted to the source of magnetism
the closer and closer you get, the more it points towards the Ore
An Iron block would have a magnetic Aura of 16 (like glowstone with light)
And Iron armour would be a bit complex to code seeing as how it would move (it's like the question of adding moving light), but the player with Iron armour on would be a total (All the Iron used in the armour crafting sommed up), if possible more than 16
The Only draw backs I see in a system like that, is that it wouldn't be able to "get your attenttion" at more than 16 blocks of range, since the light leve now is only @ 16 (for chunk generating reasons, I think)
Question #1: So you would be able to pin-point where Iron Ore is located from anywhere
Anwser #1: No, because your compass would only be attracted to it when it comes into the "Magnetic Aura" of Iron Ore (Which is 5 blocks) + A compass is 2d and isn't that great of help when mining in 3D environment
Question #2: What would happen if I was standing in between 2 blocks of equal magnetic Aura
Anwser #2: Good Luck testing it, Cause I have no clue
Question #3: So what would be the advantages of this system
Anwser #3: The advantages would be to be able to pinpoint a route, using magnetic blocks placed strategicly, and it would also give Iron Blocks a use
Question #4: What would be the cons to such a system
Anwser #4: The Cons of such a system would be, In SMP anybody could track down and use your "magnet" if not done strategicly
Question #5: So tracking down Iron Blocks would be easy
Anwser #5: No, because it would only get a slight pull when you are out of range, but would get easier to notice when getting closer
EDIT-----------
Found a Mod that let redstone power traverse the 15 block mark, you can now extented the range of blocks magnetic range to more (At least 50 blocks)
I just dug this up from the bottom of my draft bin, decided to post this

These guys make awesome art for Mods (Items, New Blocks and Mobs)
I will be using them soon

Also, for 2 similar magnetic aura blocks, the compass would point perpendicular to the line between the 2 blocks. AP Physics FTW.
And the compass retains it's use, as long as you're not in a magnetic field, just like in real life. Sweet.
That technically means the spawn point has a magnetic aura of infinity, right? :smile.gif:

Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.
These aren't new magnets, these are adding magnetic aura to blocks, and they would work by messing with your compass
Ok Actually : I'm pretty sure I explained in there

Exactly
Yep (Iron Blocks would Finaly have a use)
Yeah, don't know how that would work though (to make it blend it)
