My idea is to add lightbulbs, that would eventually replace torches, which would burn out after awhile.
I don't know if this topic has been suggested before, but I'll suggest it anyway.
So i dont know how long it would take for torches to burn out, maybe one minecraft day, but once burned out they would look the same, but the tip would be a dull black instead of an orangeish color and not emit light. You can relight them with flint and steel, or just replace them. Another theory is that the burned-out torches would just dissapear, or drop on the ground.
Lightbulbs would replace torches as a permanent light source, and MAYBE light up more blocks.
We all know how torches are crafted, so I'll show how to make lightbulbs.
First you would need to craft metal sticks. (Idk what to call them yet.)

The same way you make wooden sticks, but with Iron.
One theory is that lightbulbs would be crafted like this:

[]
Wooden sticks = Metal sticks in this situation.
And they would need to recieve power to work, like redstone or some other source of power. (Thus opening up the possibility of light switches.)
But the bad thing about that is that you might not ALWAYS want a permanent light source that you need redstone or levers to power, so another possibility is crafting lightbulbs that dont need to be powered by redstone.

Fire = Lightstone*, Coal, or some other flammable substance in this situation, i haven't decided yet.
And Torches would = Lightbulbs of course.
*Maybe not Lightstone, because that means you need to go into the Nether to get light sources that don't burn out.
As an added feature, lightbulbs would be able to be placed on ceilings.
