I believe that Minecraft needs more magical weapons such as a magical staff.
The magic staff should be crafted with 2 diamonds and an amethyst shard. And should have no durability by itself until it is augmented. When combined with a augment it be usable as a weapon until the augment breaks and you are left with the unaugmented staff. By doing this you can add a single item that has different effects driven by nbt. Augments should be different blocks and should have a low durability for balance reasons. The effect range of staffs should be 5-10 blocks.
Ideas for augments and effects:
Magma blocks should have a flamethrower effect
Packed ice should slow and damage enemies
Soul sand should make enemies fight for you for a few seconds
Copper blocks should have a lightning effect that should as converts mobs like lightning does
Glass should give you invisibility for a 5 seconds
Stone should have sweeping knock back effect
Sand do damage and destroy soft blocks like leaves
Sculk catalyst should give you the wardens sonic attack but should have only three uses
Add in healing and then I could be a Black mage and a White mage simultaneously!? Yes please.
This seems like something that simultaneously fits into what Minecraft was leaning into in the early release days when it started adding more of what people were labeling as RPG mechanics, but at the same time, it's been so long that I wonder if people would complain it "feels like a mod". I would have rather had staves or rods as ranged magical weapons rather than maces to be honest. I didn't feel like we needed another melee weapon, and while we have multiple ranged weapons, two are for firing arrows and the other is really a melee/ranged mix that is still more meant for water. Another general purpose ranged weapon that differs from physical projectile would have fit right in.
So yeah, we got a second bow and a third (or forth) melee weapon; I say staffs would fit right in at this point.

I like the idea of the augments and effects. They could bring attention to many underused materials, and there'll also be a new opportunity to improve and expand upon the concept of magic in the game, which I find somewhat limited at the moment.

everybody complains "it feels like a mod" to any new minecraft update either way, I guess they just miss 2013.
To the idea: MAGIC!!! I LOVE IT!!! feels a bit overpowered as it's just doing what potions can already do, so maybe the blocks could be changed around a little so potions and wands are at the same level, or make the blocks required rare.
Healing good but it could remove from potions as healing and regen potions exist not to mention other items such as golden apples.
To make this work healing staffs should a way to heal others and not yourself (ideal for multiplayer) so the potions would still be useful. I would also make it expensive such as needing a diamond block or something.

maybe you could use up a lot of lapis lazuli doing a spell because lapis lazuli is a magical item and once you have enough its basically useless. you could also have a long cooldown (like 5 minutes.)

it could also have it so that you could heal mobs to. maybe it could do damage to undead mobs the healing spell

Which is a coincidental year because I remember all the complaining about 1.6 that year because it "felt like a mod".
That's why the augments should have low durability so you would want to add unbreaking to the staff ta maximise the augments usage.
Staffs also shouldn't be able to be enchanted with mending for obvious reasons. though damage and/or usage speed enchants would be good.
