Just a quick thought, a Command and Conquer style overhead map (paper + compass) that shows the areas you have revealed, with editable notations (like in Baldur's Gate). I know there are mods that do this, but honestly I would think this is something you would want right out of the box. Compasses are great to get to your spawn, but you really need something for people who want to explore a large portion of the world and would like to note what is where and the different builds they have going on. I know I spend massive amounts of time creating extensive mine cart systems to help keep things orderly and be able to select which local I would like to go to, but maps would be a great help. And yes I know about using F3 for the XYZ's but I believe many people (myself included) would prefer not to have to track all their builds by using coordinates.
And before anyone starts ranting about previous threads, I have been scrolling through have not found any references to a map like this, and of course the search option has been down the last two days. It seems the only pertinent thread (found through google) to my thought is here http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=168401, and although the idea is sound, I don't know about having to "collect" pieces for the map. In these massive worlds it would be nearly impossible to do so. I do agree with the idea of obtaining add-ons, or upgrades if you will, but the standard map should show where you have been along with where you are. What would be the point of having a birds eye view of your current location only? It would turn Minecraft into Zelda (not that I have anything against Link). With all that said, I believe my point is clear and concise. Any input, opinions, suggestions, general hoopla, or expressions of complete and utter contempt are welcomed and appreciated.
Doesn't bother mine at all. I really rather like the way the landscape is randomized, and I enjoy finding unique areas and building to suite. Very relaxing. It was just a thought, I know I travel so much through my world that I have massive areas and it can get fairly frustrating remember precisely where things are (without posting a crap-load of signs everywhere). The portals are alright for traveling long distances, but still not quite right for a solid means of showing where different locals are. Anyway, as I said, just a thought.
