Not sure if there was a suggestion about this already, and I know I'm supposed to have a lot of details of my idea already, but I just gotta post now.
Well, my initial idea was to have some sort of "heavy artillery," something bigger and better than just an bow for long range. Also, something that shoots farther and is more accurate. Since a lot of people like to build castles, or giant cities, that need to be protected from creatures, I wondered. What if we had a Cannon of some sort, something that can blast away Mobs, keep them at bay. Something longer reaching than a standard bow, and something very... aim-able...?
So, I was thinking of being able to make a Cannon. Off the top of my head, maybe it could be made out of stone and iron. With a string as a fuse, and needed to be lit by flint and steel (I heard, and know, that flint is very underused).
And to load it, it should be like a dispenser. If it is to be a regular Cannon, Notch would probably have to add Cannonballs (obviously) . If that were to happen, maybe to craft it is 4 stone in a square? Not exactly sure about that. But, if coding a brand new object is too much of a hassle, maybe it could shoot arrows. (This would add more use to flint, because a lot of people would love to use the cannon.)
Crafting it: I would guess:
[] [] [string]
I guess, the iron is the base. You know, the tube of the Cannon.
The blanks are the inside, and the string is the string that should pop out to be lit by flint and steel
the iron and the bottom is the base again, and the stone is like the wheels, or mount that the Cannon is... mounted on.
Again, this is just a rough idea but I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see this in Minecraft, for the reasons stated earlier.
PS:
This might be even MORE of a hassle, but, maybe you could add a simple recipe:
[] [string] []
[] []
[] [] []
This could be like a fuse setup, so in the Cannon recipe you could replace the [string] with the above recipe.
Same idea as putting a string and setting it off with flint and steel.
Once again, a rough idea. I know theres a lot of bugs in there but I need to post this and get it off my mind and onto the interwebz.
Giant castle walls aren't enough to protect people in castles from retarded monsters wandering in aimless circles around 30 blocks away from where you are?
Did you know:
that a bow and arrow is enough, and a big ass cannon serves no purpose but to appease the Warfags on PvP?

This. I don't know why people say you are a troll Bu.
Make a TNT cannon. Did it do anything? Apart from look good and be incredibly expensive, no.
As Bu said, monsters are NOT going to kill you when you have a safe enough space to set up a cannon.
An explosive cannon would blow up the drops, an arrow spammer would fail because of damage delay, and something with a slow rate of fire that doesn't blow up is boring.
