Armor trims are intended to be purely cosmetic though, not an armor enhancement. Providing the player with special effects would ruin that cosmetic purpose. Besides, there are already various power-ups that can be obtained in the form of enchantments, potions, and blocks such as beacons and conduits; with a fully enchanted set of netherite gear and several totems, a player is practically invincible. And sure, armor trims may be expensive to duplicate in terms of diamonds, but that only provides said diamonds with a late-game use.
If you mean armor trims should be visually stackable, I suppose this could be implemented. In the same vein, it would be great if you could remove the trim(s) from a piece of armor using a certain item.
Armor trims should give different effect and should be able to be stacked somehow and you should be able to add them to tools

This could work but tools have a much smaller surface area than armor, so perhaps separate "tool trims" could be added.
I like the idea of trims being cosmetic only, and not having gameplay differences.
Removing trims from damaged armour doesn't seem like it would be possible to me.
