I think redstone ores should be craftable for two reasons:
1. Light! According to minecraft wiki, redstone ores will emit a light level of 9 when clicked or stepped on.
2. Defense! Redstone ores are pretty hard to mine right? How about using them for a house? Few torches are needed and it would be creeper-proof.
Redstone ores should be crafted like this: = redstone dust
= 1 redstone ore.
8 Redstone is required because this would prevent cheating (I.E. If it was made out of 5 redstone dust, then you could keep on mining it and making more until you get 6 pieces of dust from it, as minecraft wiki says, you can get 5-6 dust from a block).
I think you should have solid redstone blocks which are like redstone ore blocks, except they emit a light level of 15, are red and have the texture of lapis lazuli block, and are crafted like this: = redstone dust
= redstone block.
Also, it is slightly stronger than its ore version.

You could open iron doors easily.
