While I am SURE this has been mentioned before (though I haven't found it in the supermassive pile of derp) I'd still like to suggest it.
I have been playing minecraft for about 4 months, and throughout I've loved every minute of it. I play on peaceful, and I know that probably makes me a pansy, but I could give less of a damn. I have been thinking of implementing different types of trees for those of us who enjoy playing on the surface more than crouching around in caves and such. While this will undoubtedly sound like a runescapefag's idea, I assure you I haven't played it in years. Here goes:
IRONBARK
Trees as is are fine or dandy, but I'd like some diversity. I'd also like some moar uses for my axe. I'm thinking of Ironbark. Ironbark would basically be iron in tree form, albeit a small amount easier to get though not by much. Ironbark would be usable just as Iron is, but not in armor. My idea is that this is rare in the wild, though its leaves will have about a 30% chance of dropping an ironbark sapling. Its leaves will require a wooden axe or better to harvest, and its branches/trunk should require stone/equivelant. To make it not as imbalanced as it sounds, I thought about making you have to craft 3 blocks of it in order to get something usable for tools. Burning Ironbark should yield 2-4 charcoals or an Ironbark Charcoal which would burn twice-4 times that of normal charcoal.
(Planned recipie in block form is below, = Ironbark)

Saplings: Birch trees should drop birch, oak should drop oak, pine should drop pine etc. Ironbark should drop ironbark only sometimes, and others it would only drop oak. Ironbark saplings should behave in the same way oak does, in that it can sometimes grow a big tree.
I've also been thinking about adding Great Trees, HUGE trees that you could hollow your home out of, but I haven't been sure on how I'd implement them or anything.
That's pretty much all that my brains' been screamin at me to tell people, so feel free to drop more suggestions below, so I can add it in and accredit you to it. /brace for the impending flaming
Would the item produced look different depending on different woods? Are there different attributes for these woods?
Ironbark is a great idea. You could also do different metals (these would be much rarer).

The tools produced would look different for ironbark, yes. However, the tools produced from any of the 3 lesser woods would remain the same, seeing as they all turn into wooden planks when crafting. Ironbark would act as iron would, however you would need to craft the ironbark into usable amounts by using 3 pieces of a tree. Thanks for the input!
