Ah, Minecraft. The game where anything is possible. For some, It's all about mining, crafting, and never staying in one place too long. Others, they want to stay in one spot, and keep on mining and crafting from there. If you're one of these people, then this is for you. Here's the situation: You're area where you've been mining/creating your house has been sucked dry of , your local forest is practically dry of , and your saplings still haven't grown. But, you have spare from your greenhouse, A lot redstone from that one mine, and some left over from that HUGE watchtower. What to do with it? Make a solar generator! This is how to build it:

This is what it does: While it's daytime, the solar generator(s) would act as a redstone hub. It could power up to 4 different Appliances (furnaces) or other redstone-related items, using trails of redstone. Using one solar generator, you could power your furnace(s) for the stacks of iron blocks you may have been unable to get due to the shortage of coal and wood, and have another live cable(s) to the traps and arrow dispenser. At night, the solar generator's power that was built up during the day could last for maybe, 1/4th to 1/3rd of the night, to not make an infinite power source. Nothing lasts forever, right?

I suggested a very similar idea some time ago, but it's much more simplified: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=251138 All it is is a switch type block (like buttons and pressure plates) that is activated by a minimum light level. The only thing I'm not too keen on with your idea is powering furnaces. Powering typical redstone stuff is fine though.

Don't pick your nose with a pickaxe. Use a shovel.
I looked at your idea, and saw why it was pretty similar. Why couldn't it be used to run furnaces though? It would help preserve natural resources, maybe those few coal left are needed for torches or the wood for sticks.

Or, direct contact. Direct contact would work on the sides, but not the top. The top is how it gathers power!
