This would make a QuickBench, which would look like a 3x3 white grid surrounded by some kind of bluish rounded rectangle.
Right click while holding it (don't need to place it) will make you go directly to a 3x3 crafting grid, to craft.
The thing can be used 32 times before breaking. A intact QuickBench can be crafted back to a workbench.
This can be used if ever you don't have time to place and use a Workbench (Why? Don't know. Say you are running from skellies and you run out of arrows.) but NEED to craft something.
It takes almost no time at all to right click twice to place and use the workbench, and you have to stand still anyway while you craft.
Edit: Rated
If ever you could craft (somehow) without standing still, would it be good?
Hypotheticals are complicated. If you could somehow do it, then technically it would be a good idea. But that can't happen because entering a menu of any kind stops you from using your arrow keys, and you need your mouse to look where you're going.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways

Hrm... I may have found something; but I can't promise anything.
Maybe to look around you'd use A and D, and (duh) move with W. But as for looking up or down, I'm not 100% sure... I was thinking S and X, but that would be awkward. Very awkward.

Kay, this is where I get cynical so try not to be offended but...
Or you could just go to a safe place and put your crafting bench down. Skelies aren't that smart, and walls are easy to build.

Smart one :wink.gif: Maybe creepers?
Or who knows, Notch might add a 'smart' mob or summit. But I think this QuickBench idea isn't useful yet. It was an idea I had, but now that I think about it, you're right!

I agree that the crafting grid the player has should be more functional (as you might have guessed if you've seen Extended 2x2 crafting) for "crafting on the fly" but even when making something on the move, you should have to stand still while you're putting things together.
I could possibly support an idea where the player can keep moving in whatever direction they were going when they started crafting for a second or two, but would have to stop if you get back out of the menu screen to take control over your movement again.

Bad idea. Might revise later.

Bwahahaha! Smart mob defeated!
But yeah, might not be the most useful thing in the world. Not bad, but there are plenty of bugs because of how the game works.
