I remember hearing a while back about how Notch was going to change the torches around so they only last temporarily. Existing torches would be replaced by lanterns, which would last forever.
Not sure if this is still planned to be implemented or not, but personally I'm not a fan. Instead, I'd like torches to stay permanent and instead have lanterns give Minecraftians a feature they've been dying for: portable light.
Lanterns shouldn't be placeable; instead, holding it out should grant the player X amount of light at his/her current position fading out to Y radius.
If favored, perhaps make a lantern expire after a certain amount of time OR need fuel, i.e. coal/charcoal.

The wood could be a stick or something to represent the part you hold at the top of the lantern.
I wouldn't say it's cheap at all, it would only prevent mob spawning at your current location, which is prevented anyways. If you find having only a temporary source of light cheap (I personally would only use it for travel, using it in caves and such would result in failing to make much progress at all), then add on a fuel requirement to it.
