I'd like to introduce the idea of having dreams and nightmares in the world of Minecraft. The only reason for a bed is to skip to morning, but imagine if you had a 25% chance of having a dream or nightmare. Below are the individual specifics of both.
Dreams:
Dreams typically have you act as if you were awake, except it's always day. Many animals roam around and drop more things than usual. There could even be a small chance to get something useful like gunpowder or coal. Now you're probably asking yourself, "What's the use of getting these things if I can't use them when I'm awake?" Well that's a very good question, but the purpose of a dream is not for you to gain items, but to mainly gain knowledge. Say you don't know the area around you. In a dream, you could explore this area, for a limited time. You might also be able to experiment and see what would happen if you were to do something, like blow up part of a hill. Of course, none of the things you do in the dream affect the outside world. Here are a few ideas for the dream sequence:
- Dreams last about 3-5 minutes, or you slowly lose health, waking up when you 'die' (prolong your dream by eating food to regain health).
- During the dream your vision is rather bright and a bit blurry, also always in third-person.
- A certain chest could be made to store items in your dream for use in the outside world (percentages could be adjusted accordingly so you wouldn't get diamonds every time you killed a pig and the chest could hold about 3 items).
- Dreams could be determined based on how your day went (mining = a lot of coal drops, building = a lot of wooden planks or bricks, etc.).
-If your dream goes well(lasting at least 4 minutes), then you would receive 3 hearts whenever you awake, 4 for lasting 5 minutes.
Nightmares:
Nightmares are like playing on hard, even when on peaceful difficulty. With it being a Nightmare, it's always night, therefore monster spawn. Nightmares are easy to escape since many monsters will be out and trying to kill you. Like a dream, drops are a bit different. When you kill a mob in a nightmare however, you rarely get anything. When you do, it's practically useless, such as 1 dirt. Weapons like an iron sword would have as much effect on monsters as a stone, and wooden any non-weapon such as a stick or a torch. Your armor would also be less effective against attacks, diamond - iron - leather - none. Here are a few ideas:
- Out of every 1/20 monsters (5% chance), a ghast could spawn (they would have a limited height to fly).
- Nightmares would last 1-2 minutes depending on how bad it is.
- If you are swarmed by monsters and killed in under 15 seconds, you lose 1/2 a heart in the waking world (you can't have a nightmare if you have two or less hearts to prevent death).
- Like dreams, nightmare drops are determined by how the day went (mining = cobblestone, building = sticks, etc.).
- Your vision is altered so that it's rather a bit hard to see because of darkness and in third person.
Options:
Dreams and Nightmares could be turned off in the options for those who don't want to deal with it. Also, you could only put items you have gotten from mobs in the dream chest (the chest that allows you to get items achieved through dreams). The reason for this is because if you made a boat then people could put it in the chest and get the item while not losing any wooden planks. Whenever close to exiting a dream/nightmare, your vision gets dimmer and dimmer until you find yourself standing over the bed as you would when you currently wake up.
The Dream Chest could be made like this
= Redstone = Wooden Planks = Diamond
There should probably be a limit of 1 chest so as not to cheat.
This is my first time making a topic, so please excuse me if the information is a bit unorganized.
The reason why I say no is because it effectively ruins the reason why beds were created. They were created, as you stated, to skip to morning. I don't want to play a meta-game within my meta-game.

Feedback it appreciated!
I say it should remain as a mod.
No to vanilla.
