I tried sleeping in a bed in SMP and it did not set my spawn point when I died. The bed was the last bed I recall sleeping in and it is a permanent fixture in my house. I was convinced that it did not work in SMP as some suggested it works only in single player.
So my next single player game I tried it out. It seemed to work, I was excited. However, I spend most of my time on my own SMP server with a few friends. We often use beds simultaneously when we're building outdoors so we can avoid creepers destroying our creations. Well, seems one night we braved it out and I died. I was pleasantly greeted by my bed instead of the typical spawn point (in SMP).
It seems that beds do work in both SMP and single player. They may be bugged to some degree however. If it doesn't work, try re-placing the bed and then using it. Maybe 'pre-1.4 beds' aren't working correctly? Also make sure that the last bed you slept in has not moved. Once the bed is destroyed, your spawn point is reset to the original one.
I've seen them work in both modes, so they do work. It's just a matter of figuring out why they may not work and what you can do (other than try again).
On topic, perhaps this be on only Easy.
Edit: Actually no. Just no.
