I'm actually surprised this is a thing. I understand path finding can be difficult, so then at least make them immune to environmental damage. Anything from lava, cacti, fall damage, etc. They should never die from anything other than combat then. Or at the very least, only make them immune to environmental damage at a certain point, like at half health or less, or if recently hit by an enemy it removes the immunity for a few seconds. Anything to stop them from commiting suicide out of nowhere.
My first horse and wolf didn't last a day before killing themselves. I know Im not the best pet owner ever, but they shouldn't be THAT depressed with their domesticated lives. Straight up, that shouldn't be possible, it ruins the immersion and story telling and it's just frustrating having to constantly get more to even make use of the feature. A pets death should be a big event, a sad loss, not a daily chore.

This sounds more like a You problem than a suggestion, you even openly admitted you're not the best owner, If you want Advice then keep watch of your pets, like make sure to look behind to see if your dog is gonna fall or die, for a horse, you need to build a Horse Pen and a really good one, just be careful what your actions might impact on your game that gives you such deserving

that was a joke man. point was animals shouldnt be killing themselves. i shouldnt have to constantly be checking behind myself to make sure my pet aint about to leap head first into a pit of cacti.

Not constantly, whenever you enter somewhere dangerous, check behind at least and make sure to not be stupid and sit near lava or anything dangerous to realize you hear your pet getting killed, if you enter anything dangerous, check behind every minute

The entire world is dangerous. The first time I used my new wolf, the second I start climbing down a cliff he just jumps down and takes fall damage. I'm thinking wow, so they CAN hurt themselves, that renders them pretty useless. Guess I'm leaving him at home then. I start climbing back up to put him away and I get a message saying he died from falling.
It's just not fun to have to waste time nerfing a path for your pets everywhere. It'd be better if they just didnt suicide, like in real life. Idk how you could possibly think thats enjoyable. I think the mobs could use updated/improved pathfinding. It's not that they're basically suicidal as though intentional, they're moreso ignorant and blind to the dangers. Not to be invincible from environmental harm (since that wouldn't make any sense), but at least to have smarter AI with what to avoid.
Mobs are supposed to avoid blocks which can harm them, and this usually does work, but I've noticed that if they round a corner around such a block they clip into it (the pathfinding code only considers movements straight along an axis, instead of in two or more directions at once, as mobs actually move through the world).
As for falling, mobs avoid falling more than 3 blocks unless they have a target, in which case they are willing to fall further, depending on their health and difficulty (they will never intentionally fall enough to kill themselves). Another potential issue is that jumping adds to the distance fallen (you take damage when jumping from a 2 block drop, but not if you walk off a 3 block drop, since in the former case your jump height of slightly more than a block increases the distance fallen to more than 3 blocks, which rounds up to 4).
Also, in both cases if there are multiple mobs nearby they will push each other into danger; I often encounter mobs dropping down into ravines since two or more try to go on the same ledge, but if there is only one mob they have no problem staying put, even for many in-game days (you can test this by spawning mobs on an island surrounded by lava, or a platform high in the air, which they should stay on, even when trying to reach you, but as soon as there are two or more mobs one will surely get pushed off by the other).

There are hazards in pretty much the entire Overworld, nobody spawns a naturally generated cactus, cliff, ravine or a lava pool, it is done purely by the games own programming upon when you load the world seed. You don't start out with a safe haven for pets to be around, you have to build these things yourself and that can take a considerable amount of time depending on how you wish to design your builds.
This is part of the reason why I don't tame mobs at least until I have built a sanctuary, such as the one I have on a mushroom island with some friends I play with on my current server world on normal difficulty.
But mob AI is unreliable, sometimes they go in places they shouldn't even without your input, it only has to be a loaded chunk, ergo, you in the world, and the AI is free to do whatever it pleases for better or worse.
