So I would like to offer a few suggestions to the villager systems some small that allow for more accessibility to existing benches or items and others to add to the existing systems to give a more complete experience to owning and running a village.
firstly I would suggest adding more features to have it more like Minecolonies or adding Minecolonies to the base game as this currently is the best village experience out there with a massive expansion to villager professions and having the villagers actually doing their professions that effects how other villagers are able to do theirs. you know how a village/ community would work. As this is highly unlikely I've made some more reasonable suggestions below.
New bench version/ recipe
I would like to suggest an ability to have two variations of blocks that can be used as a villager's professions. this would be to allow you to have the benches needed to upgrade and store like barrels anvils etc without having villagers using them to change professions and getting in the way In your own house.
This could be simply done so that if you make a barrel, anvil, smithing block, loom, etc it's just that, and can't be used by villagers but if a new crafting recipe of the bench and 1 emerald was implemented then the bench or block will become available to villages to be used as a profession block.
This gives players the freedom to build with cosmetic and functional versions to allow more control of where villagers will go around a village and allow players to have nice cosmetics and benches around without villagers constantly changing professions and getting in the way.
another suggestion would be to make it so the pathing of villagers would primarily flow along types or roads or paths created by the player or rendered by the village instead of the fastest route so villagers would follow said paths stopping them from getting stuck in areas or as I've seen recently glitching of fences and walls launching them away, hurting them and possibly killing them.
on top of this, it would just add more to the aesthetic of a village if they would move along the paths to get to areas instead of cutting through the grassy areas.
New Professions/ rework to old
adding a few more professions like a Baker, Guard/Knight, Archer(Bowman)/Crossbowman. all with their own profession blocks maybe even utilizing existing blocks like armor stand for Knight Target for archer
Baker: would take wheat and other resources farmed by the farmers or sold by the players and create food like bread cakes etc then store them in a nearby chest to their professional block to be used by other villages or just to increase their stock to be bought via emeralds from a player or other villagers
Guard/Knight: this villager would ultimately patrol the village with given or crafted weapons and armor from the weaponsmith and armorer after being sold various materials from the player like iron gold etc. this allows villagers to in part defend themselves and not just rely on iron golems.
Archer(Bowman)/Crossbowman: Similar to above would be a ranged defender of the village also supplied in part by players or the armorer and weaponsmith but also the fletcher tying a few more villagers together.
having villagers do tasks that their profession entails, this like fisherman: fishes if they are given rods and the fish is stored in their barrels that are then eaten by other villagers not just staring at and opening barrels all day, Toolsmith: makes tools for the other professions with resources traded to or given like hoes, weaponsmith makes weapons for the 2 new professions listed above again with traded or given resources, Cleric: heals and cures villages of possible added illnesses like flu etc, The farmer: and I can't stress this enough replants the crop they harvests instead or replacing it all with wheat and trades it to the player or to the baker or even stores it in nearby chests if a limit has been hit, Leatherworker: crates clothing for the village depending on the environment or weather so villagers will have more layers in snowy biomes and would allow workers to travel to and from their profession even in the rain as they are slightly protected from it.
I could go on and list every profession but you get the gist villagers do their professions and trade with each other to allow those villagers to trade with other villagers and allow the village to function thrive and flourish etc
this is only just a small part of what just the basics of Minecolonies and I could suggest adding every profession every structure and role but then it would simply be Minecolonies which would be awesome but with the small number of changes I've suggested villages will be a more desirable place to inhabit or own
I know some if not all of these suggestions require work but the point of allowing a community to make suggestions is to allow them to offer some of the craziest things they can think off and this isn't too crazy. but assuming there are even a few other people out there that would like to see some if not all of these changed to the villager/ villages system is more than enough for the devs to take another look and maybe inspire some changes down the road.
