This is a list of things that I believe would greatly add to the game. I know that there are hundred's of suggestions that pop up on various sites and forums daily, but many of them are lame and will never be added to any such game.
Firstly- Check boxes that allow one to turn features on/off
These would only be accessible when you first start a map.
They would be things such as making wolves untamable, turning specific mobs on/off, or make beds only astetic.
Second- "Round" worlds
Allow the world to loop after a predetermined amount of chunks
IE. Walking north from spawn will eventually bring you back to spawn.
Third- Inventory auto select
IE1. I have a iron pick in my 2nd slot, and it gets used up. It will then search my bag for another iron pick, and put it into that slot. It will automatically use the lowest durability of that item. If there is no iron pick then it will find the next lowest pick, IE stone, but will not go up (from iron to diamond)
IE2. I have 2 stacks of cobble stone in my inventory, and 1 gets used up. It will then be replaced by the next stack of cobble (will not use any other block)
Fourth- A mountable Clock
The same schematics as the current clock, but you are now able to attach it to a wall.
This would be for underground bases, so i do not need to constantly carry it in my inventory.
Fifth- Some more crafting items
-Add a Brick half step and steps. These would be craft able using bricks, not brick blocks.
-Add Sand Stone Steps.
-Gate for fences. Like a half door, but you cannot jump over them. Come in wooden and iron variety.
-Iron Fences. Like current fences, but crafted with iron (get x amount per craft)
-Craft-able Flint. 2-4 Gravel crafts into 1 flint. (an alternative to trying to farm it)
-Saplings to sticks. 1-2 saplings = 1 stick (Ive got 2 chests full in my tree farm, and i incinerate countless of them.
-Dirt to clay. 8 clay blocks surrounding 1 bucket of water = x clay (hard to spam because bucket of water takes 1 inventory space)
-Sandwich. 2 wheat/bread + 1 cooked (pork-chop or fish) = i (pork-chop or fish) sandwich.
Sixth- "Craft List"
Each world has a list of items you have crafted, or obtained. This list would come up as a tab when you use a book shelf. It contained all schematics you have used. And will also contain all item/block strength/resistance/durability/health-regain along with a short description of the item.
Seventh- Server side textures
Allow servers to force the player to use certain texture packs.
These will only affect blocks, and/or creatures. Item icons will still be the same as to the players texture pack.
Eighth- More compasses
Crafting 1 compass + 1 gold = compass that always points N.
Crafting 1 compass + 1 Bed = compass that always points to "current player spawn"
Ninth- Survival Mode
Toggle-able at the start of a map
can only place crafted blocks. (all non craft able blocks do not drop)
Start with 1 wooden axe, Must use "right tool for right job" IE. cannot punch a tree down
-Hunger (toggle-able in non survival mode)
-Hardcore mode (toggle-able in non survival) when you die, you do not re-spawn.
-Toggle-able "thirst" (when on, water cannot be placed, only drank from a bucket)
-Once you place a block/item, it cannot be picked back up (Torches will not drop when hit)
Tenth- Selectable Paintings
When placing paintings, if you are holding shift, you can select what paining to use (as long as there is enough space)
Eleventh- Carry-able chests while in place.
You can only grab-chests that are on the same or +1 block level of you
can only place chests on the same or +/-1 block level of you
cant jump while carrying
causes movement to come to a crawl
if damage taken u drop the chest, and all/some items spill out
Twelve- mine-carts.
Speed up the powered mine-carts
Allow powered mine-carts to travel up a 1-1 hill
Allow the ability to "hook up" 3 mine-carts (IE the powered mine-cart can be used to pull instead of always pushing)
When using a powered mine-cart, allow a change of direction, and a break.
"mine-cart detection" track-piece that sends out a red stone charge when a mine-cart passes it.
add a special dispenser that will spit out a mine-cart (including chests and powered) when activated by red-stone
remove the mine-cart "booster" glitch
Thirteen- Stick of Coal.
Marks an arrow facing away from the player when used.
tool (single stack) with small durability
Can only be used on top of stone/cobblestone/Mossy Cobblestone
Fourteen- Iron handles
Allow Iron handles to be used on Shovels, Pickaxes and swords
Iron Handles will increases the durability of the Tool by X%
Dose not effect the speed the item mines
Fifteen- Lanterns (toggle-able)
Torches will burn out after an amount of time
Craft-able Iron Lantern will give X lanterns
Iron Lanterns can be placed at the bottom of a block (hang)
[] []
Craft-able Paper-lantern
Paper-lanterns may only be placed on the ground due to flammability = paper
[] []
Paper-lanterns and torches will be destroyed if water touches them
______________________________________________________________
Wolves
Limit the amount of wolves that can be tamed to 3
-Whistle
Tool with limited durability
When you use the whistle while pointing in air/blocks it will call all your tamed wolfs to you.
When you use the whistle pointing at a creature, it will attack that creature.
______________________________________________________________
Red-stone
Red-stone block
Must be activated by red-stone, otherwise it will be off
Current dose not pass threw, but can receive a current.
Gives off light when activated (use for man made dungeons, to allow mobs to spawn then turn on lights to fight them all)
Red-stone crafting table
Allow the creation of single block logic gates (And/Nor/nand/xor/xnor)
Output facing away from player when placed.
2 sides and back for input
______________________________________________________________
SMP
First- Claiming Steaks
-Allow the server to give claiming steaks (1 per player)
-The claiming steak will give a player ownership of X chunks when placed.
-You cannot place a steak within Y chunks of another players claimed area (to make a gap between areas)
-You cannot Build/Destroy any block inside another players claimed area.
-You can move your own claiming steak, but it will remove the protective aura around your building.
-If another player is within your claimed area, you may attack that person even with PVP off. This gives that person the ability to attack back. It stays in effect until the attacking player leaves, or eater player dies.
Second- Locked chests
-Locked chests may only be placed within claimed areas.
-If the area becomes unclaimed, they will unlock. if this area becomes claimed by another player, then it will become that players chest.
-Lock Chests have a different texture than normal chests, and cannot be used by other players.
-If you are killed by another player, that player will gain 1 "user-name-here key", allowing access to 1 locked chest of the defeated player.

They like to troll new posters with the one suggestion per topic rule. Don't worry about it. Just make sure you describe your idea in detail and use the search every now and then.

How is informing new users of the rules trolling? Trolling would be "ONLY ONE IDEA PER THREAD you dumbass faggot noob *****".

Nice list of good ideas here. It's better than individual threads IMO.
That's what i figured. I see countless threads of a quick 1 sentence post of a idea...
Wish lists like this are just as bad as 1 sentence ideas. When you make wish lists, it's hard to discuss and expand on. When you make 1 sentence ideas, there isn't enough details. If you want to make a good suggestion thread, Stick to a single idea, flesh it out, post it and expand on it.

They are trolling by saying you're not allowed to post more than one suggestion per thread, which is simply not true. It's just frowned upon. Plus there is no need to bring up the rule as the rule only affects how many people reply to the user's thread. It obviously doesn't affect the person mentioning the said rule.
We suggest for the poster to limit his suggestions to 1 per post as a benefit to both the READER/CRITIC and the POSTER.
By limiting the topic to a single suggestion, the writer has much better creative energies than if he were to broadcast his energies in a shotgun fashion.
Plus, this prevents you from wasting YOUR time when people tell you that all 20 ideas were already suggested.
Finally, before you post, do a quick check of the first 5 pages to see if the idea hasn't already been suggested. They ask for you to check Google, that's a good resource too but is a lot harder to use than simply doing a search through a few pages and using Kira's sticky at the top. It takes a bit more time, yes, but causes much less frustration in the long-run.
People often complain about Necroing threads (or raising them from the dead); I'd rather see someone necro an old thread than add more content to be necro'd. Perhaps that's just a personal view and I should be drawn-and-quartered for this view; but it goes inline with my view of:
1 thread with 300 voices is greater than 300 threads with 1 voice.
If your idea is good, but not original enough to be interesting people downright ignore your thread anyways. These threads don't receive as many responses due to having to divide the opinion among many suggests and the title is non specific. If the thread has a lot of thought out ideas that make sense, then I think the thread is collectively good.
Really I think a lot of these ideas should be implemented. There should be placable clocks, toggles, and several other things. Other things like carryable chests would break the game and multiplayer stakes would never appeal to Notch.
There should be some form of marking device. Coal stick could work. It could be called a marker. Or maybe if they included soot or ash and then you combined it with a stick, you would get a marker. It would be hard to track player movement though. It should be based on what direction you're facing. It you were directly facing it, it would follow the standard rule of deciding directions.
I'll break my discussion into several posts. So I can effectively piece your ideas up into logical evaluations.
I dislike the wooden axe idea. If you goof off and break it, what then? You wouldn't be able to do anything for the rest of the game. You'd have to start a new world. Also, punching trees is iconic to minecraft.
