I think it would be pretty cool if, under every tree, there were root blocks. One root block for your normal 1x1 tree, and four root blocks in a 2x2 orientation for the T H I C C trees (dark oak, jungle, mega taiga, etc).
When you deforest an area in the game, once the dirt blocks formerly under the trees grow into grass, honestly, it does not look deforested in any way. It just looks like a weird treeless, green biome with very sparse sprinkles of grass (the plant, not the block). I think it would be really cool if, after chopping down a bunch of trees, you're left with an area sprinkled with root blocks. It would look kinda cool, and actually look like deforestation took place.
To truly "reclaim" the land from the trees, you would need to manually get rid of the root blocks. Some might say it would be a hassle for the player, but honestly, that's the whole point. The player shouldn't be able to get rid of the forest's legacy that easily. The root blocks would be the last hurdle before the player can truly get rid of the forest in its entirety.
The underlying concept is that deforested areas should look deforested unless deliberate attempts to get 'rid of the evidence' are commenced.
Actually I would like roots too but I'm afraid it would mess with the way saplings grow, like right now they just need one dirt block but if you add roots then they need more and what or where can they grow into? etc
