my attempt here is to propose a number of blocks that all really serve the same purpose, Aesthetics.
these blocks are not in any way intended ti change the feel, merely provide ways to enhance it in localized areas. i felt that none of these blocks deserved an independent topic, yet they all deserved to be heard, so i shall post them here. they will be broken into segments.
WALLS AND FORTRESS ENHANCEMENTS:
Gargoyle:
my first suggestion is a gargoyle. it will be a simple block shaped figurehead designed to enhance the appearance of stone fortresses, walls, corners. the gargoyle would need a simple shape, and would be placed like a torch. it would have separate pictures for when it is sitting or when it is on a wall. the gargoyle would require a slightly more "heavy" placing algorithm, because it would need to check player facing like the stairs. as well one might wish to check whether or not the gargoyle is suspended in a corner, as that would also present the opportunity for a unique shape, though this is somewhat redundant.
one possible shape for the gargoyle in the crafting box might be:
[] []
[] []
Arch:
the arch is a block type similar to stairs except it's intention is to make corners look slightly more rounded. the arch would be placed and would have to change based on other arches. slanting the arch could use a method similar in some respects to water and lava, though tinkering would be required. when placed in a 1x1 area the arch should be unique in that it slants to both sides.
arches could be used to allow large monuments to look much better, and to add an interesting feel. the slanting would occur in a blocky fashion so it is unlikely to damage the "feel" of minecraft. this block would be perfect for creating small windows, and for creating buttresses such as the ones on medieval cathedrals. arches may be built out of stone, cobblestone, sandstone, or brick
Angled Terracotta roof:
the terracotta roof would be created using clay. the roof would form an angle based on the blocks next to it using an equation similar to water and lava. the roof would making an interesting sound, somewhat like the sound from assassins creed(which is actually where i got the idea.)
this would greatly improve the look of houses which before this had a bland wood roof that looked rather inappropriate, or a stair roof that again looked off. this would also increase the uses for clay, and give it a greater purpose, also warranting an increase in it's spawn size and making it less of a wasted block.
45 degree walls:
the purpose of this block is to make horizontally slanted walls for castles look better. the act like stairs that have been rotated (in terms of placement.) they may only be placed where theres is a horizontal corner, and do not pay attention to vertical factors.
the purpose of this block is to improve the look of castle walls, as well as "rounded" turrets (the type of tower that is prevalent on most medieval castles due to the difficulty of scaling and breaking a rounded surface.) i believe this would greatly improve the look and appeal of most castles. the 45 degree segment may be built out of stone, cobblestone, wood, sandstone, or brick.
INTERIOR DECORATION:
Chandelier:
the chandelier is a decorative piece intended to provide castles with a greater aesthetic appeal, as well as a source of light other than torches. the chandelier may only be placed on the ceiling and hangs down 1 block. the chandelier may be built using either wood, iron, gold, or diamond. the construction shape of a chandelier is as follows:
[] []
with the gold being replaced with the desired resource.
the chandelier is another aesthetic piece intended for use in castles, as i feel those best fit for minecraft. (this is my first real suggestion so i will save the radical ideas for latter.) i think it would be really cool to have for things such as dining halls.
Carpet:
nothing special, is effected by the color of wool you use, and is also a castle enhancer, though it could also be used in homes. the carpet would go well with the chandelier and paintings that i suggested/ are already implemented. the carpet would be placed block by block, possibly adding a small border where it ends. this would allow one to make a large red carpet leading to the golden throne they created... um.... yea.
food/tableware:
a small aesthetic piece for decorating the tops of tables. possible shape:
[] [] []
[] [] [] = bowl of soup.
i think this would greatly improve the look of tables, but the geometry would have to be simple (possible crossing 2D squares that have textures with large degrees of "alpha"/nothingness.)
ROMAN AND CLASSICAL:
column:
the column is a slightly decorated hexagonal pillar that has a texture that makes it seem as if it has been carved. the top and bottom of the column have a small stone piece that again, looks like it has been carved (through texture use) the column only acts in the vertical direction, so having two columns directly beside each other does nothing. this column idea is intended to provide people with greater control over the aesthetic of their buildings.
Dome:
this is the single most difficult suggestion i have made. Pantheon style domes, with an occulous at it's center (if the dome has a center) i would go into greater depth, but the dome would require it's own topic that i do not wish to make unless people show interest. needless to say it would need it's own algorithm for creating the dome, and deciding how a player would place it would be difficult, but this would be the single most influential upgrade to the classical aesthetic that is also quite prevalent in minecraft.
Statues:
the statue is a 1x1x1-2x2x3 block that changes shape similar to a painting. the statue can be change from a person, to a pig-riding knight. the statue is created from either stone, iron, gold, diamond, or marble. the statue would be perfect for those medieval buildings and would look great outside someones house. other ideas for shapes are a large knight (not mounted) a miner holding a pick, a cannon (if they are ever added to the game), a creeper or other MOB, or even a mine cart. you could create a obelisk, or a small memorial stone. this would greatly enhance appearance in towns of both medieval and classical nature.
Marble:
this is actually a suggestion for a block type for minecraft. marble is basically a stone-like block, that shares almost all of it's properties. marble would be whitish, and be perfect for creating less gloomy castles. marble could also be used in the creation of statues. marble is mostly aesthetic, but does have some interesting properties. marble is stronger than stone, and can't be mined with a wooden pick. marble does not need to be smelted to be used. and above all, marble looks good.
using stairs would provide the same graphical effect that the 1/8 blocks would (except where you get into corners) and i was suggesting a smooth flat ramp that adjusts it's angle based on a calculated width/height.

The intent of 1/8 blocks is to build smaller decoration. A fair amount of the stuff here would be doable via that concept.
And that sort of ramp won't ever happen in vanilla Minecraft, plain and simple. It's made to be blocky. But again, there's likely a mod for the flat ramps you're after.

For mentioning Assassin's Creed, I offer you this:
Marble's been suggested a ton. There's a mod for it, I believe.
