As you all know water and lava flow downward. and swiming up water pushs you down. what if you can find a really rare liquid that flows the oppiste direction it flows up.
and example of how it works is basicly after placeing a source block with a bucket it would flow straight up and flow around any thing it runs into. And walking into it you would flow upward by default.
This would actually require a liquid less dense than air (gas). While this is not entirely impossible, it isn't entirely intuitive for one to consider at 1ATM and -30~50 degrees c. Which, if biology dictates correctly, are the temperature limits of human survivability.
The only problem I see with this, isn't the unrealistic qualities of the liquid itself (I love random seeds with tons of floating islands, also *points at avatar*). Nor is it any notable effect on single player games per say. Its the absolout horror it would cause in SMP.
Last time I checked waterfalls cascading down from the near the skybox (created by players) cause huge ammounts of stress and lag for the servers. An anti gravity liquid would potentially represent much worse as it has the potential to exist naturally and cascade up to the skybox.

If gas were ever added, it would likely only generate in caverns and underground regions.

No we don't.
Besides, gas has been suggested better by other people.
