As the title may imply, this thread is about potential crafting recipes for headgear that which would allow one to breath underwater.
There would be four different types of breathing-assistant headgear:
A Snorkel, as well as three different varieties of Diving Helmets.
The recipes for this would be quite simple.
For the Snorkel:
[] []
[] [] []
= Sugarcane, for the breathing tube. = Leather, for the straps holding the snorkel together. = Glass, to protect the eyes of the wielder from the water.
The Snorkel would have the same amount of damage resistance as a leather helmet, which is to say barely any at all.
For the Diving Helmets:
[] []
[] []
[] [] []
= The helmet of your choice, as long as it's not leather or chainmail. = Glass, for the same purpose as the snorkel's glass.
The Diving Helmet that is produced will be equal in damage resistance to the helmet used in crafting, so therefore I recommend you use Iron or Diamond for crafting purposes.
The whole purpose of these craftable headgear is to provide one with the ability to breath under the water without sacrificing defense.
And please do excuse the way I type, it's natural for me.
EDIT:
As suggest by Esch, the different headgear should have a limit at which depths they are effective at. The snorkel should be effective only up to 2-3 blocks, the iron diving helmet, maybe 6-8, diamond 12-14, and gold, perhaps no limit, because it's magical.
Love the idea! The only limit on it should be the depth of water it can be used down to.. IE: A snorkel could only go underwater about 3 blocks deep but a diving helmet could go 10+, etc.

That sounds like a very good idea. I will add that to my original post.
If I'm not mistaken, the Jack-O-Lanterns can be used underwater.
no you are not mistaken, they can be used perfectly underwater. i think hes talking about hand-held lighting such as a flashlight or glass covered torch.
What is it?
A craftable "glass helmet" that does not provide additional armour, instead it doubles the number of air bubbles in the player's air gauge when underwater. To further balance the benefits of this item, it would have a very low durability and will smash easily if the player takes damage. This would encourage the player to use it only for underwater construction and exploration. It would be virtually useless in combat.
It's simple and balanced solution that uses mostly existing mechanics and expands the players options in-game.
Q: Why not have a full "diving suit" instead of just a helmet? A: Because that's overly complicated and this is just a game. Keep it simple, keep it fun.
Q: Glass isn't rare, it would be too easy to make a diving helmet! A: This item isn't overpowered and shouldn't be hard to obtain. It doesn't grant any extraordinary ability other than slightly longer breath. I think glass is a good balance and fits with the theme of a "bubble helmet" like old divers used to wear.
Q: It should be made of SLIME or some other rare material instead! A: Just no.
You know what? I like my idea so much I'm gonna make a Get Satisfaction topic right now. Vote for it once I add the link here.

[Edit] Nevermind. There's like, a billion diving helmet Get Satisfaction topics lol. AT LEAST I CHECKED FIRST BEFORE MAKING A NEW ONE. This one seems to be the most popular of the bunch so I'll just directly link you there.
