I've seen this mentioned in a few threads, but not one of its own. Basically, it's a redstone-based switch that is triggered by light (or possibly the absence thereof). The crafting recipe would be very simple, something like this:
[] [] []
[] []
[] []
= redstone dust
Each panel would be the height of a slab or pressure plate, preventing it from being a great obstruction (it can be walked right over). Right-clicking a panel will toggle the amount of light needed to activate it, much like how right-clicking a note block changes the pitch and how right-clicking a repeater changes the interval. This could be an excellent way to set up certain mechanisms that are dependent on the time of day or on a certain light output from a device.
For example, main entrances to your bases and outposts could have two doors: a primary (controlled by buttons, levers, pressure plates, etc.) and a secondary (controlled by a solar panel). When the sun is up, all of the secondary doors swing open, allowing normal passage. However, when then sun goes down, all of the secondary doors shut, preventing nighttime intruders and forcing players to rely on secret entrances.
Really, any large series of events could be triggered in this way, and by any source of light. Perhaps even mob shadows could be implemented into blocking light, allowing for the set up of perimeter alarms. Your thoughts?

Don't pick your nose with a pickaxe. Use a shovel.
I think that such things should be very brittle, and if someone steps on it, it should break. You'd have to protect them. somehow (double/triple fences)
A lot of stuff that should break when it gets stepped on doesn't, so it would be silly to single out this one block just for that. However, naturally, it should be destroyable like any other block. Not sure if it should be able to be re-collected for use in another area. Should it just break like regular glass does, perhaps leaving redstone dust behind?

This is a great idea. This could also be used for things like warning clocks. You would hook them up to a torch, and when it starts to get dark but your inside a mine or something like that, it will alert you to falling light levels telling you to seek shelter. I would also then ask for torches that could activate when a redstone circuit is enacted, allowing for a brighter light with a switch. Wonderful idea!

I support so much that I cant possibly name it all. I tried and passed the 255 character limit with 533 characters total.

In this case, after some time, it would just simply break (no re-collecting).
