I read through a thread suggesting to add poison mushrooms earlier, that sparked some ideas.
I figured instead of making soup out of these mushrooms, we could craft them into poison. From this we could craft it with either a bowl to make a bowl of poison or glass to make a bottle of poison. (either or not both)
With this poison we could possibly craft it with a sword to give it a 1 time use, poison DOT effect (this way you can't stack the effects)
We could also use this to add poison arrows to the game. Crafted from the bowl/bottle of poison and an arrow, or to make it more difficult to get: craft it from poison, stick, feather in a vertical line.
This could bring a new weapon into the game: the dart gun, which allows you to use poison darts to slow the targets movement and/or cause a weak DOT effect (these darts would do no damage on contact, making the darts specifically for causing those effects) The slow movement effect would be a great help for future bosses and current creatures.
Recipe for the gun could be : 3 wood planks in a vertical line
Recipe for darts could be: poison, stick, feather in vertical line and in that order from top to bottom.
Maybe this could create a new passive / aggressive (when attacked) daytime creature: the poison dart frog, which has a chance of dropping poison when killed.
It has also just been brought to my attention that slime balls could be given a purpose and be used to craft poison?
Of course not all of this has to go together as a single idea. Please feel free to suggest changes / build on these ideas.
Any DOT should be capped at 3-4 hearts max, damage increments of 1/2 a heart (per 3 to 5 seconds), and poison items should have a fairly long cooldown. Those conditions met, I can support poison DOT.
Slowdown and DOT should not be coupled. One or the other. If slowdown is the effect, it shouldn't be drastic.
I think the best resource candidate to make any poison item would be slimeballs. It would finally give those little guys meaning in life . . .

Slimes aren't poisonous.
Not now . . . but they could be :smile.gif:
I'm not necessarily saying Slimes themselves would be poisonous on contact. I'm just saying that their slimeball product could be -- I mean, unless there's something that's been set in stone about them not being poisonous, which would be rather ironic considering (haha get it?? SLIMES?? SET IN STONE?? euheuheuheueheuhe).

Slimeball is a ball of slime. If it's poisonous, slimes would have to be since they're made of it. And they currently aren't nor should they ever be. If poison were implemented, I vote new mob. Scorpions have poison, stick 'em in the desert. Then poison requires a search to find said biome. Or snakes. Or some biome-specific variation on the spider.

EDIT: also, poison arrows are the best bet in my book:
