Slate would be an interesting block. When found naturally, it looks similar to stone, except with a wavy texture. It would act like a normal stone block, until you try to harvest it (Wood Pickaxe + to harvest). When "broken", it would fall like sand or gravel. When the block hits something below it, it breaks into 2-3 "slates".
Slates would be useful blocks. They can be crafted into a slate block, like this:
= slate
Which can be used for traps. When hit with a redstone current, they also fall.
Also, if slates are smelted in a furnace, they turn into Hard Slates. These can be written on like signs, but with more room. Also, if placed on top of a block, it lies horizontally, like a book.
A true advantage of slate blocks is that water passes through them, and any dropped items being carried by the water goes through too. This makes them ideal for item-collectors for traps.
So feel free to comment and add suggestions.

Gold is MEANT to be useless.
Wrong. It's meant for me to look like a pimp.
Slate is a solid rock. Why would water pass through?
Because this slate is made up of multiple rocks stacked together (the "slates" that you pick up) with space in-between. Well, that's what it would be if it were real. I don't know how that would be programed.

Slate is real.
Anyway, it'd make more sense to have some form of craftable grate.
