My idea is that you should unlock the skill to craft more items for game time played.
While I agree that there is already a fantastic progression going on with needing better tools to go deeper into caves, and to get better and better items. I say that you shouldn't be able to just mod 64 diamond and craft everything you want.
However, this isn't a complete thought, It's just something that popped in my mind and I'm going along with it. But I've always thought of MineCraft working like...ages. For example, the first parts of a MineCraft playthrough is the Wood Age. The of course, the Stone Age, then the Steel Age, Gold and Diamond Age, and maybe the electrical Age.
But what I think is missing is...prepare yourself...Industrial Revolution!
After a set amount of time after hitting Diamond, new things should become craftable. I suggest this because the usual average gamer usually gets bored after using the Diamond things for a while. So, I have some idea that you should be able to craft...machines. Guns, Drills, Tractors, Cars and possibly aircraft should become Craftable.
This would automatically make the game interesting after most of the game is over. I'm a victim in finding this bland after a while. This would definitely spice things up.
Guns, Vehicles, Planes? Horrid sugggestions that have already been suggested and rejected. And the game is about being able to play how you want to play, so if some people want to mod to get a bunch of diamonds and make their expierience that much more boring, then let them.
I was using them as examples for something that makes something easier for someone. I was using those as examples for something more complicated and less simplistic and...cave man.
No, no, no, no, no.
A great thing about minecraft is that you can unlock your full potential within a 1/2 hour of gameplay. Minecraft should allow player freedom, not restriction

The point is it's simplistic. And either way, you should refrain from using examples everybody hates. And they weren't just examples anyway, you plainly stated they SHOULD be there.
If you find it boring, then you need a massive project. Car add nothing because there are no roads. Minecarts are all we need.

Does this take into account the amount of time I simply idle while I'm doing something else in SMP? I tend to simply leave the game running and not even realize it as I'm busy watching movies, going out, or doing household chores so my fiancee doesn't end up ripping my head off. She's only done it once, but I got better.

The game literally ends with diamond and rebegins when you have to re-obtain diamond. When the game ends, the meta-game begins. This is fortress building, undead survival, etc.

There's a lot more going on in classical terminology involving ages. During the shaping of civilization, man had acute knowledge of the properties of iron but technological limits ensured that only copper could be properly smelted due to it's comparatively low melting point. That being said, simply because you hop from wood to stone to iron doesn't mean the player isn't aware or is incapable of producing. He just doesn't have the materials on-hand for the purpose. If you do wish to refer to it in ages, I can tell you I go from the wood age to iron age in about 5 minutes without delving past the surface.
But what I think is missing is...prepare yourself...Industrial Revolution!
A revolution of 1 man is hardly revolutionary. A better term is revelation. Plus, there is a disjoining. Industrial revolution was spurred by the necessity for fast locomotion between cities, primarily in the United States. There is no such need in MC as you're talking 1 man making a city for himself.

Again comes the idling.

Adding another mechanic will just give you another thing to grow bored over before you'll demand more. Be happy and complacent with what you're given or simply move on.
