I just had this random thought. It could already be suggested but i thought i'd post anyway.
What if there was a block in game that could keep you from dying when you jumped from 15 (more or less) blocks up?
I think it could be very useful. People could use it in different ways. It doesn't really even have to be a new "block". How about adjusting sand?
Ex. A fall that takes away five hearts would only take away two and a half hearts if you landed on this "block".
you could just fall in water without adding a new block so why would you need to do that

Welcome to the forums, by the way. I'll be your brutally honest dream-crushing critic for...Well, your entire stay. So make your ideas good ones. [Diamond]
Herp derp, there's an even better way. Here's what I do:
Ehnonimus's Drop Shaft of Awesome
[] <- Surface. [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] <- You can have multiple drop-in points. [] [] [] <- Place a single water spring here. Water blocks 3 deep will absorb any fall damage. <- A sign props up the water.
[] [] [] <- There's a short drop after the water, but it's small enough you don't take damage.
[] [] <- Bedrock.
[*:qhznaia1] Provides the fastest way to the bottom with no fall damage.
[*:qhznaia1] Since you fall through the water, and not into a pool, you're instantly ready to go. No messing around trying to climb out of pools. Drop, and start mining!
[*:qhznaia1] You could remove the water and switch the sign for a ladder, but you risk accidentally clipping the top edge of the ladder and killing yourself. Water's the sure thing.
[*:qhznaia1] Combine this with a nearby water-ladder shaft for fast transport back up, and you're set to go. These two shafts are usually the first things I build when I start a new base.
Eh, it's not incredibly useful to have to drop onto a specific block to lower your damage. You have to set it all up first, then, and that's just a hassle. I'd rather have a parachute.
he does have a point and water isn't always so convenient, not to mention the few uses for what im about to suggest; wool. Wool would be the perfect cushion for falling, its easy, logical, and opens more of a door for the use of sheers less your making a picture but i dont have a damn picture in my worlds and ive been playing for about 200 hours now.

I would actually like this. I remember playing as a noob, jumping onto floors of wool and thinking "this can't kill me, I won't take fall damage!"

Use vines instead of ladders for safety.
