before you start saying that it's been said listen to my version. what it should be is something like this

where the blank spaces can be wood, cobblestone, iron, gold, diamond, or obsidian and that manages the power of the "spell". the chest is where the item is put, netherstone makes a fireball spell, bucket of water creates a water block, lightstone makes a light that acts like sunlight on the space that was hit (light zombies on fire), sulfur creates an explosion. if there are any more ideas respond to the post.

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
Oh, and sense I like to nag about it, magic is an unexplainable phenomenon that is done without any reason. Psychokinesis is the use of the mind. On topic: I don't understand the crafting formula. You should fix it.

More fun SPELLS, less war SPELLS. As per Notch's stated preference for using magic to do entertaining non-combat things rather than the same old "throw fire/ice/earth/wind at mob" spells.

the outside part on the 3x3 crafting grid is filled with stuff you use for tools+(obsidian) to manage the power of the spell. the core determines the type of spell
I said fix the formula. [] means nothing is there. It is confusing.

I'd rather allow gold items to be given enhanced abilities that don't simply increase durability/speed/damage, but give completely new abilities to the player based on the function of the item.
I don't particularly like the idea of casting fireballs, or lighting and that type of stuff, but since blocks and items in the game already have unusual abilities and effects, it wouldn't be completely out of line for the player to be able to gain "magical" abilities from the tools they use, as long as they aren't outright "energy beam" style effects.
If people really want to be able to launch flaming projectiles at mobs, or even some other elemental effect, I just think it makes much more sense to use the projectiles we already have...I mean, we can already fire flaming arrows if we shoot through lava. The only needed changes would be to make the fire effect actually catch things on fire when the arrows hit, and perhaps a way to set them on fire before shooting them so a wall of lava in front of you isn't always necessary...
Get a mod. Use it. Gasp in surprise. Welcome to the world of mods, we respect your newbie-ness. Now please don't force us anti-magic minecrafters to use your stuff.
