Minecraft is the best game suited for a mimic mob. Think about all those chests that generate in the world.
(Including nether & end)
Each one would have a chance to jumpscare you!
Instead of creating spawneggs for them, i'd like to see a mimic chest / chest-minecart in the creative menu.
If you try to open a mimic chest, it will become the hostile mob. If you mine it instead, it will drop a normal chest.
Of corse it would be possible to check every chest using debug screen first,
but most of us don't do that with infested blocks either, right?
I'm not sure what it should drop. I just think it's a perfect jumpscare. And i don't think shulkers are simular to mimics.
There might be other issues with my idea. How should a mimic chest respond if filled with a hopper or dropper?
I just don't know. What do you think?
Edit:
Should a mimic chest "burp" if filled with a hopper or dropper?
Neat idea of the mob itself, quite classic yet fitting for the game.
However, making it drop when mined kinda defeats its purpose, since when you are sacking a fortress mining chests is actually quite time-efficient method of chest looting with practically no flaws.
Using F3 on a chest wouldn't matter much if the chest could be checked by shooting an arrow at it, one durability point on bow or crossbow this or that way...

I like this idea. I think any issues could be fixed with some code magic and spawn eggs, leaving potential for mobs that like to hide in chests, not just impersonate them, and maybe even other containers. Loot tables updated to include spawn eggs. When the container is opened or broken, the spawn egg triggers, spawning the mob. Mobs that are the container could spawn immediately when mined; perhaps give the container an NBT tag that makes it instantly break when mined when it has the right spawn egg.
EDIT: I bet they could tie it to the loot generation, since it doesn't generate until the container is opened/broken.
Don't me! You specifically know that this is based on a mod! So enjoy while it lasted
Wow, you literally targeted 3 of my threads bc i gave you some critique? That's fine by me.
About the mimic, i don't know how old it is but with final fantasy (as one game featuring the mimic) beeing a dinosaur in the gaming industry the mimic didn't originate from a minecraft mod. Maybe it originated from D&D. I don't care and there is no copyright for this fictional creature.

My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
It's a good idea, but the impact of the mob will wear away quickly. It'll be startling for the first few times, but eventually you're gonna get used to it and question if every naturally generated chest you come across is hostile or not. I'm perfectly neutral to whether I support this or not.

That would be cool. But I also feel like the developers must have considered it already at some point. It would be cool tho,

Aren't these Mimics based on a mod?
I had a seizure seeing that
It should drop to shelved!
