I had an idea for a new dimension. Now I know that new dimension suggestions are often frowned upon, but mainly because they try to add a lot of complex content and distract from other things that need work. This dimension would be very simple and straightforward, a minimalist dimension if you will. It's only purpose would be to provide a flat ground for you to build on.
Limbo
Limbo is an infinite completely flat plane. No hills, no valleys, just completely level terrain stretching off to infinity. There's little to be had in the way of resources. In a sense it's a blank canvas. A place where construction is simple and your ideas can be tested out without hills, water, and lava to get in the way. Where you can build minecarts tracks without worrying about a pig jumping in your path.
The only thing breaking the monotony of this landscape would be the occasional ruin: a fragment of a wall or arch or a single pillar made of mossy cobblestone. These ruins would be few and far in between, with huge swathes of land in between them.
The ground would be made entirely out of voidrock, a white chalky stone that would extend all the way down to the chalky white bedrock. You can mine in limbo but only for construction: there are no resources at all to be found underground besides voidrock and more voidrock. Besides voidrock, and the rare bits of mossy cobblestone on the surface, there's absolutely nothing to acquire in limbo.
Limbo would have a day and night cycle, but with very long days and very long nights, each about 7 times as long as their earth counterpart. During the day there would be no mobs at all, and the long days would provide plenty of time to work on massive projects. At night the wraiths would come out. Wraiths would essentially be zombies, except they could spawn in all light levels. Wraiths are a helpful reminder that there's a real world (and a nether) that you've been neglecting, and perhaps it's time to leave your projects in limbo for a week of earth time while night passes. Or you could stay and conduct epic never ending battles with wraiths pursuing you throughout the reaches of your fortress, falling into cleverly designed mob traps, etc. Your choice.
Don't get me wrong, I prefer how lively, random, and varied earth and the nether are. But it would be nice to have the option of boring flat land when I want it.
Um...Protip: Saying in the title that your idea is boring...Not a good way to go.
It sounds sort of neat but I'm gonna have to say no. (It sounds like Alaska somehow too)
Well, the idea is that it starts boring but you make it interesting. The dimension is kind of like an empty desk that makes it very easy to get your work done, as opposed to a cluttered desk full of interesting but distracting things.
Or just wait until night, when the wraiths come out and it gets very very interesting in the "May You Live In Interesting Times" sense.
Sounds like creative mode...without the infinite blocks and with a mob to get in the way...
Well, I view it as a hybrid of creative and survival. You could built elaborate structures with few obstacles, but keep the resource gathering elements of beta. And even creative doesn't give you a perfectly flat landscape to build on, or dig into.
And during the night, wraiths wouldn't have to get in the way. They could be an attraction. An endless swarm of enemies that can spawn even in lit rooms is appealing for some combat-minded people. And if you don't want to fight them, just return to earth for a week to gather more resources.
I also imagine that unlike the nether, limbo and earth would be the same size. That is, no fast travel. And portals would be the same distance relative to each other in limbo as they are on earth, allowing for easier to design multi-dimensional dwellings.
